Janssen and Rasmus are best trade chips. We have depth to replace both.

Exactly

That's all AA has to work with

We can't trade Edwin, Lawrie, Reyes or any of the (2) reliable starters because we need them

I'd much rather attempt sign Rasmus to a reasonable extension than to trade him.... You'd be buying high a bit but the guy has so much raw talent and the defense is always going to be there. His defense is so underrated on this board IMO.

I agree we should keep Rasmus.

I personally think we should be looking to deal both Bautista and Jannsen for a handfull of young MLB ready youngsters.

What depth? Gose? If this team starts next year with Gose as a starting CF, we're done. Rasmus is coming off of a 5 WAR season in 118 games. That's almost 7 WAR over a full season....

Colby should be thought of as a building block, not a trade chip. The guy really turned a corner this year... batting stance that seems to work for him... was consistent throughout the year with only one poor month...

That's the plan mid or end of 2014 if the team still sux

We should also extend Colby for 4 years first too for a bit less than he might be through arbitration next two years.

Yeah well we he can stay down there until he learns how to take a walk and play good defense.

or we could just spend him packing and tell him to f*** off? I like my idea better

It really depends where payroll is. AA needs to find a way to add a C, 2B and another SP. Rasmus could be a great chip to land a SP, it would also open up some payroll to add Choo (who helps this team more than Colby). I'd be more than happy to keep Colby around but, I'd shop him and move him if he can be used to improve the team.

I think the people pining for a Colby trade are hoping for subsequent moves in the trade or FA market. If AA were to move Colby (like to SEA for Iwakuma) and then go out and sign Choo it would help this team win more games. I don't think anyone would be happy with a outfield of Jose, Melky, Gose unless the plan was to rebuild.

And it you're planning a full rebuild after next year there's no Bautista out there

If this team is not in first ( Unlikely ) at the trade deadline then it is gut job time .Total rebuild . Trade EE , Bautista , Dickey, Reyes , Buehrle and load up on MLB close top end guys . The rest of what is left is cheap enough that Rogers can still make money and that is all they care about . Pull a Marlins/Houston and be competetive in 3 years

And for the love of god hire a GM that uses a computer and isn't afraid of the free agent market.

I've pretty much given up on attracting top end FA,s Stache which is why i coveted Darvish so much . Even Tanaka if the posting rules change will have his choice and most just don't want to play in canada in the AL east on artificial turf .

Now Cubans might be the exception . Canadians are loved in Cuba and travel isn't restricted so AA should be pursueing that route .

The Jays also need to look long and hard at our farm Development system . . Go rob the Cards system and the Rays systems . Our Outfield prospects come to the majors with a huge lack of fundimentals . It is actually embarrasing to watch

I'm not ready to accept that yet. We saw JP lure Burnett (great deal), Molina (fair deal), Thomas (should never have included the 3rd year option) and Ryan (terrible decision) over a two year span with a weak Canadian dollar and a payroll lower relative to the rest of the league than it is now. I refuse to give AA an out here. Talents like Chapman, Ryu, Iwakuma, Martin, Swisher and a slew of others have signed very fair deals and I don't believe that they would have all declined to come here had he matched/beat the offers they signed.

If you pay them they will come. I doubt Cano would turn down $305M from the Jays or anyone else.

but all we've seen on that front in 4 years under AA is $10 million to Hechavarria and $16 million for Cabrera - two moves I loved when they were made.

The Darren Oliver contract has worked out pretty well, honestly. Probably ~5m in surplus value at a really reasonable price.

As far as trade pieces go we really only have BP guys so unless AA goes out and does sign free agents this offseason then we certainly aren't getting a top starter . Truth be told I doubt there is any top starters on the market anyway other than Price and we can forget about him TB doesn't trade him to any div rival.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but I still go back to being too cheap on Darvish . I wanted him badly. Now Tanaka isn't YU but if they don't change the posting rules in time We do have a shot at him . If the posting system changes then I doubt he signs here . Even if a rebuild is necessary He would fit in .

I suspect Az would salary dump a McCarthy or Cahill for something we can afford to give up but now you just have a bunch of 3/4 and 5 starters so are we really Improving ?

Yup. And it doesn't even have to be giant signings. I loved what Cleveland and Boston did last year on the market: responsible deals for established talent that won't kill you even if they go wrong. Aggressive and informed deals for top international talent and the odd splurge on mid-range major league free agents can and should be a part of the way this team operates, but all we've seen on that front in 4 years under AA is $10 million to Hechavarria and $16 million for Cabrera - two moves I loved when they were made.

Yep the thing about FA is that overpaying for players on 3-4 year deals isnt necessarily a bad thing if you're able to operate with a large payroll, since you're basically adding free wins to your roster without giving up any assets. There's also always dumb GM's out there willing to give up assests for guys who just signed overpriced free agent contracts 1 year prior.

Kind of like AA getting Reyes and Buerhle??

You can probably get McCarthy or Cahill for a reliever. Kevin Towers loves BP arms.

"The Blue Jays constantly get calls on Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista and as always, they're willing to listen on anything. The shortage of quality hitters out there could lead to better offers than they've gotten in the past, but their stance remains the same: neither one will be moved unless it leads to an improvement of their big league team."

The way I see it is they won't be moved this off season, but if the team tanks again next season and they both show they're healthy, I would think the rebuild has to start with getting a haul by trading both of them.

Maybe if they get Abreu, they could then see what they could bet for Bautista this offseason, I know it's unlikely, but would be interesting.
