Blue Jays assistant GM Andrew Tinnish and scout Danny Evans were in Japan in August to scout Masahiro Tanaka, Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun reports via Twitter. Clubs connected to Tanaka so far include the Twins, Giants and Yankees.

Let's not get our hopes up, but.. let's get our hopes up.

And he's only 24

OK, need to avoid going full Darvish excited here...

He's not as good as Darvish. Darvish projected as an immediate ace, which he's lived up to. Tanaka is a #2

19-0 with a 1.20 ERA 0.9 WHIP this year. 5 HR in 172 IP and 6K:BB. Not bad...

His FIP must be -3.4

His ERA+ is infinite

He is the most interesting man in the world

His numbers in the Japan league all look a least as good as Darvish's, in fact most are better except the K rate

I don't remember if someone posted it here or it was on mlbtraderumors, but I think they said that while Tanaka has had success, he doesn't have Darvish's overpowering fastball and would more likely be a mid rotation guy. Still, if the posting cost isn't too high ...

Bad news is Yankees want

And the posting process for Japanese players is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen

Right. And I don't care what Rogers pays for a posting fee. Not one little bit. AAV of contract would be non-crippling and costs no prospects or draft picks.

Really good but not trending the right way now.

How does that stack up to Yu?

I think he'll be a decent #2.

Not really, they were "interested" in Darvish but didn't make a serious bid. They have been burned in the past and seem to shy away from international free agents

He's only pitched more than 186 inning once... I'm not familiar with the Japanese League. Seems like too few innings for so many wins. Other than that... yes please !!

This is true. Darvish pitched more innings per year in Japan. Maybe because more durable, maybe because of his manager's style and the bullpen on that team. Hard to tell. It wouldn't appear to be due to results. Both have phenomenal WHIP and ERA.

What?

I thought Darvish could play here and he has. I find it a rarity. I don't think many Japanese pitchers can do it here.

They have been burned by not spending enough. They really like Chapman but they didn't pursue him aggressively enough. They liked Darvish but they felt it was too much of a risk. Teams who have been bold (Dodgers with Puig, Reds with Chapman, Rangers with Darvish, A's with Cespedes) have been rewarded. Even Hech wasn't a bad signing. He didn't live up to the most optimistic projections but he's a good player and he could have been very useful to the Jays this year and next if they had kept him.

AA is pissed we missed out on Darvish. With a larger budget, AA goes after Tanaka.

Tanaka flops.

Blue Jays destiny.
