DustyBaker Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jonathan-lucroy-on-the-art-of-receiving/ Decent (and quick) article on one of, if not the best in the league at framing- although he apparently doesnt like to call it that. We need to get this Charlie Greene working with our guys. In his words, the most important things for a catcher, in order, are : “receiving, blocking, throwing… and then hitting.” As opposed to our current mindset for catchers of "Dingers, Ribbeys, Twitter..... and then throwing"
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 If McCann isn't in the budget give up the pieces to land Lucroy. I have no idea why AA thought this team could contend with JPA as the starting C.

But I know those aren't your words. Thanks for posting.
DwightDM Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 What would it take to land Lucroy? Would the Brewers even deal him?

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 The truth hurts: AA doesn't know enough about baseball to know JPA is a bad player. I just can't accept that. It was painfully obvious he wasn't a starting C the last two seasons and 2013 is driving the point home. AA has made a lot of mistakes since he became GM but, none were immediately fire-able offences -- if JPA is the 2014 starting C there should be a pink slip on AA's desk opening day.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 What would it take to land Lucroy? Would the Brewers even deal him? I don't see it happening. They locked him up to 2017 and their only catching prospect is only 19 and really struggling behind the plate.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 What would it take to land Lucroy? Would the Brewers even deal him? A lot. Young (27yo) talented catchers who are under control through 2017 don't come cheap. Definitely talking a top prospect (Osuna/Sanchez/Stroman) and probably a couple B guys.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 What would it take to land Lucroy? Would the Brewers even deal him? He's a substantial asset. I don't see why they would deal him, but if they did for some reason, it should cost a lot. Like, Brett Lawrie straight up. Or Aaron Sanchez + another decent piece.

They locked him up to 2017 and their only catching prospect is only 19 and really struggling behind the plate. It would take a full fledged rebuild and an ownership group that doesn't mind being terrible for a couple seasons. I can see the Brew Crew going that route though. As you said though MIL wants to keep Lucroy and it will take a convincing package to get him.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Unfortunately nobody above him really knows anything about baseball. Very true. Even worse Beeston thinks he knows how to build a WS contender.
DwightDM Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Yeah just looked up his contract. It's unreal, he should probably fire his agent haha. 3+ WAR guy and top pitch framer(whatever you want to value that at) at $3M per with a $5M option. Like you said, no way he gets moved unless its a crazy return.
DwightDM Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Think about this to add to your pain - it's probably not that far of a reach to suggest JP and Lucroy will earn similar amounts over the next couple of years with JP and his dingerz hitting arbitration.
DwightDM Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Sorry, I should say JP heading to arbitration. Suggesting JP can hit anything (even arbitration) is likely a reportable offence.

Like you said, no way he gets moved unless its a crazy return. Or, unless he has a down year and writes a racial slur on his face. Then his value would instantly = nothing, apparently. Seriously though, Yunel Escobar was a similar asset in the not too distant past. It's really irritating to think that Toronto just set all that value on fire, and now TB has a ~4 win player that they got for free.

Like, Brett Lawrie straight up. Or Aaron Sanchez + another decent piece. In terms of value I think Lawrie is a good comp. Obviously there is very little incentive for the Jays' to make that deal. I'd like to think that package centred around Sanchez could work. Something like Sanchez + Drabek + Jimenez might pique MIL's interest.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 I doubt they do that. Drabek and Jiminez have next to no value, and Lucroy on that contract is very, very likely to be more valuable than Sanchez going forward. Ya they'd have to really like Drabek. TBH I don't think Nolin would be enough and I wanted to avoid including Hutch. haha Let's not kid ourselves though, MIL needs pitching desperately. The only way you land Lucroy is if you offer up a couple good young ones that MIL feels will be rotation fixtures going forward. Sanchez + Hutch + Jimenez and call it a day!

He signed that after just 750 PA's so this was just buying out his arbitration years, while he would have done much better it's not like he cost himself a huge FA contract. Pretty sure he qualified for the super two so he's getting the higher of the two contracts listed.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 The truth hurts: AA doesn't know enough about baseball to know JPA is a bad player. you would wonder why there isn't someone in the system that does who can inform AA??

Didn't you just get the feeling that Yunel would end up in TB after he was dealt to Miami? Actually, even before that, Friedman was probably on high alert right after the eye black incident.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 The truth hurts: AA doesn't know enough about baseball to know JPA is a bad player. A bad GM can't see the talent or lack of talent in a player (Dayton Moore 2,0). The Jays need a FO that can identify true talent (acquire, develop and maximize potential)
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 ... and Lucroy on that contract is very, very likely to be more valuable than Sanchez going forward. It's just another hypothetical, will-never-happen trade, but the Brewers org is pretty desperate for good, controllable pitching. They have a pretty solid offensive core and almost no solid young pitching to complement it. *IF they had another C in the org and Lucroy was movable, something like Sanchez + other depth pitching would be appealing.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Yup. Obvious move was obvious. Similarly, Friedman probably has Josh Johnson identified as a buy-low signing as part his plan for covering Price's innings next year. You probably nailed it. He'll probably regress and people will claim it's Maddon's magic.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 You probably nailed it. He'll probably regress and people will claim it's Maddon's magic. Moneyball: Take advantage of the other idiots/morons around the league.
