Well you are disagreeing with the numbers then as the team is much better on both ends with him off the floor this season

 

GD, I agree but JV isn't really a catch and shoot guy.

 

All the advanced metrics rate JV pretty well. +/- is reliant on the rest of the line-up and opposition. I don't have the stats to back it up but I feel like JV hasn't been on the floor against subs very much this year, I could be wrong though.

I think sometimes it just comes down to the players. You can have the best systems and it won't matter depending on personnel. Lou, GV and PP were all not good defensively before coming to Toronto. Add in JV and Ross's youth and you could see why the team isn't performing great on that end.

They've gotten worse though, and it's not like they made a whole lot of changes in the off season. Lou Williams is a bad defensive player but they also added JJ.
