Well I think they showed us how to play the last minute without Ross. The Novak/Salmons substitutions showed us exactly how to use them. Each played a role in those final 2 possessions. Ross plays good man to man. He has a good set shot and he can dunk when he is open down low. However he is not that good at driving the ball which is critical in the final few plays to draw fouls or make that fancy lay up. So I think he is being managed well playing the minutes he gets. This is his second year remember guys. How do we know he commits the foul to give with 3 seconds left. Anyhow I don't even really care either way but I do get mad at the ignorant comments about coaching after schooling the other team in the final minute to come from behind.

 

I understand part of what you're saying, but for example, given that Ross has a good shot and great athleticism (as you mentioned), what is the logic to having Novak in there? All Novak does is stand in the corner hoping for a pass, while Ross has great mobility, if told he could stay at the 3 point line and gather attention, or run to the basket and draw some contact/finish. In summary, Novak just stands there, and TR can at least run around the line which is much harder to control.

 

Then there's defense, I don't want to sound pretentious but anyone could have committed the foul to give, I'm certain that Casey being a good coach was screaming that the foul was a possibility, and players were probably ready. Overrated or not, Ross is a GOOD man-to-man defender, and the best we have; if Salmons was known for his D I wouldn't object to putting him in the game over the sophomore, but sadly, he isn't.

Yeah that blows. At least I think it's fair to say our fans are pretty loyal, even when we were sucking. It's a huge advantage to have if we manage to clinch the 3-seed.

Yeah you're right Ross could have easily been a decoy like Novak. Maybe they thought he would serve as more of a distraction since he just came off the bench. Anyhow I'd really just like to see people reserve the Casey is an idiot comments if he really f***s up in the playoffs. It would be nice to see nothing but positivity after a big win.

 

There really is no defending it and I haven't agreed with anything you've said in that regard.

 

Ross is better at everything than Salmons and he can do the exact same thing Novak does on that final shot.

 

He shoots over 40% on 4+ attempts per game from 3 for f***s sakes. Hopefully Casey's subs don't cost us any games in the playoffs

Ross isn't very experienced, I don't have any stats on this but I distinctly remember he made a fatal error in judgement late in one game I was watching.

These kind of errors are to be expected by young players. This Raptors team is far more composed and less prone to turnovers and absurd shots late in games then any Raptors team in recent memory. The coach has to get a good deal of credit for this, whatever he's preaching the team has bought into.

Are you joking? The abysmal ISO plays called at the end of close games has lead to two or three horrible turnovers and/or horrible bricks of contested shots I can remember in the last two months alone. Sure this team is better, and it absolutely in part has to do with Casey's coaching (particularly on defence) but they are also winning in spite of his horrible late-game playcalling and extremely questionable rotations (particularly with Ross and JV)

That and combined with the quality of the Magic is the reason why we haven't given up the lead yet. Salmons would just be fadeaway-jumping our way into the tie.

Landry Fields has had a very positive impact on this game. Outstanding defense.

 

Fields should be in there 100% of the time over Salmons.

 

Always puzzling to me why he was just buried at the end of the bench. Offensively flawed? Sure, but he's solid.

I don't have a problem with the current lineup out there tonight. Orlando looks awful and are one of the worst teams in the league. Limit Lowry and DD to 25-30 minutes tonight. Save them for Miami.

 

With that said, JV and Ross should still be getting minutes.

I don't have a problem with this unit if we're able to maintain the 10+ lead, but when the game starts getting close and they eventually get the lead (which happens all the time) is when you have to put your starters back on, and that doesn't happen quickly enough.

Yeah I don't have a problem with this unit right now, and Orlando blows big time, but it's happened against teams like Cleveland when we ride out the bench too long and the other team starts pulling away with the game, which makes it necessary to pull off yet another comeback.

 

Bench playing out of their minds though, respect.
