JP and Thole

He get's his chance every 5 games, if he play's well start him next game. But why would any sane manager just bench his starting catcher for a guy playing worse and hasn't even caught any of the SP before (except Dickey)?

 

playing once every 5 games is not enough time to get your timing down or gain any confidence at the plate, heck it took all of April for the Jays to get going.

It's not the hitting that's bad.... he's a very very poor defensive catcher. I'll take a poor hitting, good defensive catcher over a power hitting, poor defensive catcher every time.

 

As for Jiminez, he will not go the d'arnaud route. D'arnaud was traded because he is made of glass. Jiminez is also superior to D'arnaud defensively

He's not a good defensive catcher, Blanco was a good defensive catcher. Nickeas is better defensively than Thole and JP, but an absolute horrendous hitter.

After around 350 PAs last season OPS'ing around .580, 60 wRC+.. without showing plus defensive skills, he's lucky to be getting any ABs in the bigs...

 

JPA sucks but Thole sucks even worse. If he wants to win some ABs, he needs to make more of his limited appearances. Doesn't deserve an extended showing.

Thole is a pretty horrendous slugger, he doesn't look like it but the guy is pretty much just a singles hitter.

Are you guy's really serious about playing Thole more? He's even worse than JP, Thole needs to hit higher than .105 before he starts taking playing time away from JP.

 

Nice sample size. Thole needs to get regular at bats to get going. He's already proved that he is a good MLB hitter v RHP.

He can't hit a lefty to save his life. Well he hit them at Buffalo but that's a new and surprising thing and it isn't the Majors.

Based on a 500AB season, JPA is on pace for .92WAR.

That places him 31 out of 41 catchers.

 

Yan Gomes with 112AB (SSS), would be on pace for 4.9WAR.

Thole v/ RHP, JPA v/ LHP... This is the clear move that needs to be made, I just wish AA/Gibby would have the stones to try it for a while.
