GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I just copied one of Aces and pasted it 6 times to see what would happen. That's the error message that came up, and apparently there is a 10 000 character limit. Which sucks Ah well, I guess we'll just have to live without it for now. You could just get rid of some of the s***** org filler guys from the post, though.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Conner Greene lol What the holy hell did I just watch
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 If we don't get either Tellez or Brentz, the draft will be disappointing for me. We need one of them.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I'm not sure who this guy is but he got re-tweeted by Jonah Wesley. Justin Millar @Justinmillar1 9h I think there might actually be a chance that both Jordan Sheffield and Jacob Brentz get signed. Also really like the @JonahWesely pick.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Well f*** f*** Come on AA, offer this kid a s*** ton.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Looks like he's gone already bro Everyone has a price. Brentz is still my priority, though.
Folkways Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Baseball America ranked Tellez 36th overall on their board. Minor League Ball had him 26th overall. He was likely looking for big cash. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2013-mlb-draft/2013/6/2/4371874/updated-mlb-draft-2013-profile-rowdy-tellez-1b-hs
Folkways Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Yep. That's probably why he fell so far too. Could have been maybe one of the steals of the draft if they did though. I bet Tellez thinks of himself as a 1st rounder in his own mind from those rankings, so not much anyone could do.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Lots of guys like that drafted in the later rounds who won't sign. One thing it does do is allow the Jays some time to talk with him and his family and learn more about them. Maybe that information helps them in a few years and they decide to draft (or not draft) him again.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I would love to have another chance to draft Ryan Kellogg. Looks like Tyler Beede has a chance to be a top 10 pick next year as well. Wouldn't we both need letters of consent to draft them?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 What was the report on him? Guess I could go back and look, already got called out for being lazy in this thread once today. Haha There's no report on him but PG has him at 84 MPH from the OF and he's a switch hitter, which I like. I need to find some video on him.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Okay, that's kinda awesome. Another Kevin Pillar would be awesome. Hit tool please. Want to find some damn video on him.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Thaaanks King haha He looks better from the left side, looks nice in the OF but not THAT quick and more like a corner guy, but this kid can HIT. I really like his swing. Reminds me of Chris Hawkins from a little while ago, without the pop.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 From PG: http://www.perfectgame.org/Draft/DraftHQ.aspx Frankie Piliere: I'm late on this but I saw Patrick Murphy when I went in to see Mitch Nay and came away more intrigued by watching him. He was nasty, fascinating pick[/b] Comment From Tim Any word on Tim Mayza (Millersville, PA) Nice lefty who can get it in the 90s Frankie Piliere: 5-10 round for Mayza I'd guess Frankie Piliere: Love Ryon Healy, love this pick. Blossoming into a major power bat, big athletic frame AllanSimpson: Evan Smith was a fast riser in Alabama. We had him as No. 2 HS in state, even though the panel was stumped Frankie Piliere: Evan Smith - very interesting. We just had him 88-93 last week at W. Memorial Day PGJerry: Obviously they are not using the PG database. We have Smith ranked 172 as a LHP who has touched 93. Comment From Jose Thoughts on the jays draft so far? Todd Gold: Going against the grain taking a couple HS guys who are coming back form elbow injuries. Hollon and Murphy could've gone higher if they'd been healthy. Be interested to see what they do from here. AllanSimpson: Top college seniors on PG Top 100 board: 4 Brandon Thomas 6 Cody Stubbs 7 Connor Harrell 8 Sam Wolff 9 Kendal Graveman 11 Tyler Olson 12 Calvin Drummond 13 Colton Plaia 14 Mike Yastrzemski Todd Gold: Some nice value for this slot with Conner Greene. Lot of projection, gets into low 90s already, good shape on curveball. PGJerry: I'm surprised someone didn't take a chance on Jacob Brentz by now. I was thinking he was signable, but maybe not at this point. Big arm might really develop over the next year or two. Now I hear Driver's name called, so who knows. Comment From Kevin What is your opinion of the Blue Jays draft strategy. I like the Bickford pick, and Hollon is alright, but what's with the other pitchers? Are injured players a new market inefficiency I'm not aware of? Todd Gold: Yes, elbow injuries aren't as much of a long term concern as they used to be. Murphy has a lot of talent, and it would seem that he comes at a discount because of the injury. Assuming he's healthy, it could be a sneaky good pick. It's a risky strategy to be sure, but it'll allow them to get more pitching upside than you'd be able to by ordering off menu. And it fits their farm systems composition, with less pitching depth and the ability to be patient. David Rawnsley: TORONTO BLUE JAYS IMPRESSIONS (Rds 1-10): There seems to be lots of angst among Blue Jays fans out there and for some reason Blue Jays fans seem to populate the Internet more than most. At least there is no need to over-analyze the team's intent, when you draft only pitchers the first 9 rounds that becomes obvious. And the organization is also obvious in its confidence in developing young pitchers. Bickford was talked about by lots of teams in the top 10-12 picks, so that pick isn't out sync. But Hollon (because he probably could have been drafted later) and Murphy (due to his not throwing in a year due to TJ surgery) are certainly interesting picks. Murphy is the type that under the previous rules would have been picked in the 8th round and just given the money but that is no longer possible. I have no issue with the 4th-6th round picks, in fact I think they were very solid, especially Matt Boyd, who is a great value there. Blue Jay fans shouldn't have angst about Evan Smith even though the MLB.com crew didn't know who he was, he's a very solid projection LHP who is a solid 4th round value, PG knows all about him :-). Overall this is a "C" first impression draft for me based on the 2nd-3rd round questions. David Rawnsley: IMPRESSIONS ON YANKEES DRAFT (Rd 1-10) I think this is the Yankees best draft in years by a large margin and am very impressed. They nailed it perfectly with their first 3 picks in Jagielo, Judge and Clarkin, absolutely spot on IMO. Katoh was a very interesting pick at #66 but it wouldn't be a Yankees draft if there wasn't something off the board. Katoh is a simply OUTSTANDING defensive 2B, don't think for a minute he'll play any other position. He is also a plus runner who flashes power you wouldn't think is there. He also plays the game with enthusiasm and intelligence and is full of personality. The rest of the picks were solid and even inspired (O'Neill). Pretty much an "A" draft for me. David Rawnsley: BOSTON RED SOX IMPRESSIONS (Rds 1-10): I think the Red Sox got who they wanted in Ball and Stankiewicz in the first two rounds, although I'm not personally as high on Ball as that but then of course didn't see him this spring, so I could be naive there. They made a nice adjustment getting Denney where they did and I wish the analysts would stop fussing about future positions with him, just let him go out and catch, he has the tools, let's see if he has the skills and mental make up. I thought there 4th-6th round picks were solid (Smith, Luttrell, Austin), especially Austin, and of course their last 4 picks were senior signs to pay the anticipated freight for Denney (again showing flexibility). I'd give it a first impression "B". David Rawnsley: Very nice that the Blue Jays selected Jake Brentz. You can be sure that there were conversations this morning and that Toronto has a plan. It also means that the Blue Jays have picked 10 pitchers in 11 picks. Hard to mistake that intent! Frankie Piliere: Mayza is a sleeper. Very raw but 90-93 lefties don't grow on trees David Rawnsley: I know if Kendall was on this chat he'd love the L.D. Danzler pick by the Blue Jays. Kendall Rogers: Little surprised to see Eric Lauer go so late ..... Going to assume he ends up at Kent State. David Rawnsley: Matt Dermody for former PG scout/current Blue Jays scout Wes Penik! David Rawnsley: When you hear about a Tellez or Longhi or a Crowe being picked in the 30+ round it is largely a sign of respect for an area scout who especially likes the player or just out of respect for the player. It isn't with any real signing plan or intent. Are the picks "wasted" per se? Not really. But their purpose is largely internal, not public. The college picks are to fill minor league roster spots and just easier to understand.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Okay, a couple players look like they've either signed or are very close to signing: http://highschoolsports.al.com/news/article/-4159801025523639784/blue-jays-grab-mary-montgomery-pitcher-evan-smith-in-fourth-round-of-baseball-draft/ Evan Smith isn't wasting anytime in starting his pro baseball career. The Toronto Blue Jays selected the former Mary Montgomery pitcher in the fourth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. He told AL.com that he will fly to Tampa, Fla., at 4 a.m. Friday to sign his contract. "I'm excited," he said. "This is what I've been waiting on and working on my whole life. I'm just ready to get started with the next step." http://lancasteronline.com/article/local/859249_Toronto-Blue-Jays-select-Marauders--Tim-Mayza-in-MLB-draft.html "It is a lot to take in," Mayza told the MU sports information department. "I'm trying to chase the dream of playing in the big leagues. Every kid playing baseball has wishes of seeing their name up on that board. I'm happy that it happened, but I know there is quite a bit of hard work ahead and a long way to go until I reach my goal of the big leagues." "Tim Mayza leaves Tuesday for a mini-camp in Florida and then will be assigned to one of three organizations: the GCL Blue Jays (Rookie), Bluefield Blue Jays (Rookie) or Vancouver Canadians (A)." http://www.wkyt.com/sports/headlines/Woodford-Cos-Hollon-prepared-for-pro-life-210663621.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Clinton Hollon says he hoped following the major league draft he'd have to make a tough decision between college and pro baseball. After being taken in the second round by Toronto, Hollon said the decision was made for him. "This is what I've wanted to do since I was a little kid and my dreams are coming true," Hollon said on Friday. "I'm ready to make it happen as soon as possible." News on Jacob Brentz signability: http://ballwin-ellisville.patch.com/groups/breaking-news/p/jake-brentz-picked-by-blue-jays-in-mlb-draft "I was holding firm to my number," Brentz told Patch shortly after being picked Saturday, adding that turning down "quite a bit of money" yesterday "was the hardest decision of my life." After not being taken after the first two days of rounds were done late Friday afternoon, Brentz said "I thought I'd be going to school." Saturday that changed when the Blue Jays, who he said have been one of the top teams talking to him throughout the process, called. "Hopefully we can make a deal," Brentz said, adding that he expected talks to pick up in the next few days. Apparently we had two tough signs targeted at 10 and 47 ahead of Bickford and Hollon but they wanted to attend school no matter what: Arash Madani @ArashMadani 1m On the draft, Anthopoulos says the #Bluejays were willing to pay over slot for the picks 10 & 47, but the kids wanted to go back to school Any guesses who those players might be? The only guys who seemed unsignable were Connor Jones, Kyle Serrano, Jordan Sheffield, Cal Quantril, Ryder Jones, Cavan Biggio, Dustin Driver, and AJ Puk.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Sounds like Brentz is signable, which is amazing to hear.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I don't really understand why school vs signing is such a big deal for some of these guys anyway, especially the more academic ones. Most of them will spend at least a year or so in rookie or short season ball which runs during the time they'd be off from school anyway. Go to college and get the experience anyway, and you have a big signing bonus and summer job on top of it. Maybe teams don't generally like this, I don't know. Seems pretty reasonable though. Heck, encourage them to do this and give them a scholarship to attend school while video taping/scouting their peers as payment for the scholarship.

I don't like any of the players named better than Bickford. At 10, players that I'd want to go overslot for were all gone, so I don't know what kind talent can warrant over slot at 10 there.

"but the kids wanted to go back to school" That means it's a college kid. It'd have to be Manea or Stanek, which makes no sense, because they're Boras clients. Interesting..
IronLadle Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 So are Bickford and Hollon unsignable?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I would assume that Hollon will go underslot and if Bickford wants to get paid we'll just punt the pick
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 (edited) Apparently both Trey Ball and Teddy Stankiewicz are signing underslot for the Red Sox giving the money to go after Denney. I wonder how much under slot we can get Hollon or even Bickford. I know Bickford supposedly put out a big number, but if he wasn't taken by the Jays at 10, I think he would have fallen to the mid to late teens (San Diego, Arizona, Los Angeles) or early twenties (Tampa Bay, Texas, Oakland) in which case the slot value would have been around 1.8mm-2.6mm. I think 2.5mm would be a fair offer for him, and would save us 400k to use on one of our late picks. Hollon was taken in the second round 47th overall but was ranked at 90 by BA. Windle who was ranked 47th by BA signed as the 56th pick with the Dodgers for slot value of $986,500. I think that is fair number for Hollon as a slight overdraft which would save about 300k. Brentz was ranked 80th by BA and taken in the 11th round. I think he'll want more than what Tucker Neuhaus (#83 by BA and taken 72nd by Milwaukee) so over 771k. I predict based on that that it will take 1-1.3mm to sign Brentz. Toronto Phil Bickford 1st Round 10th Overall BA Rank: 20th (Slot) $2,921,400 (Bonus) ? Toronto Clinton Hollon, RHP, HS 2nd Round 47th Overall BA Rank: 95 (Slot) $1,168,200 (Bonus) ? Toronto Jacob Brentz, LHP, HS 11th round 325th Overall BA Rank: 80 (Slot) $100,000 (Bonus) ? For comparison, here are the bonuses for some of the players who signed already along with their draft position and BA ranking. Dodgers Tom Windle, LHP, NCAA 2nd round 56th overall BA Rank: 47th (Slot) $986,500 (Bonus) $986,500 Brewers Tucker Neuhaus, SS, HS Competitive Balance Round B 72nd Overall BA Rank: 83rd (Slot) $771,000 (Bonus) $771,000 Nationals Jake Johansen, RHP, NCAA 2nd Round 68th Overall BA Rank: 182nd (Slot) $820,000 (Bonus) $820,000 Phillies Cord Sanberg, OF, HS 3rd Round 89th Overall BA Rank: 40th (Slot) $593,400 (Bonus) $775,000 Edited June 9, 2013 by ace3113
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I predict based on that that it will take 1-1.3mm to sign Brentz. I'm sorry, but if we're saving a couple hundred K here and there, I see no reason we shouldn't be getting him signed at this price.
StevieRay Verified Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I personally doubt he would sign for 1 mil+. IIRC, last year's highest bonus after Rd 10 was a touch over 400k for Ryan Borucki (not sure if it's just blue jays or all baseball). I'd say he sign for less than 1 Mil if not much less. It's just because it is super difficult to squeeze slot money in the current system.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Jays better sign that Wangsness girl to their rotation.
