GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 I'm aware of the numbers I've already looked it up. I was just wondering how you wanted to stretch him out. I think they just wouldn't pitch him for a little while (short bench call up a reliever) and use bullpen session and arm strengthening routines.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 With Esmil Rogers getting spot starts the Jays should use this opportunity to piggyback Cecil and begin stretching him out. Start with 3IP and give him a month (4-6 outings) or so to get used to it and then bump him to 5IP. If he has efficient outings let him get to 6IP at the tail end of the year, if not use that BP depth and pull him after 5IP. I don't mind this approach, gives him a chance to stretch out slowly and see what you've got each step of the way. The last thing I want is for them to send him down to the minors with the message that they're going to convert him into a starter. I feel like Cecil's a guy that would take that message and then try too hard to make it happen.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 I think they just wouldn't pitch him for a little while (short bench call up a reliever) and use bullpen session and arm strengthening routines. I would personally try to avoid this kind of approach. Whatever he's doing prep-wise before his outings seem to be working. I would have him continue to do what he's doing, and then slowly let him go longer in his outings, and evaluate along the way (velocity levels vs. outing length, etc.). I think the last thing Cecil needs is a new game plan.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 The fact that they took prep arms in the draft and avoided the college ( Shipley ) guys in a college heavy draft makes me think we have to start doing something like this . Even trading Oliver once healthy they still have Perez coming back . I really like Cecil in the pen but I have no clue who we will have as starters next week let alone next year What a frigging mess .
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 The Two guys most counted on were Romero and Morrow . RR has self destructed and Morrow is either hurt or inconsistent . JJ is an FA that will get overpaid so we are left with RAD and MB . Who knows how Happ pitches coming back from almost getting his head removed .
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Author Posted July 3, 2013 Release Wang, call up Stroman? Find some multi-inning stint for Cecil b/w Rogers' and Stroman's starts?
Jay Train Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Best-case scenario: He's an effective starter and eats important innings. Wosrt-case scenario: He goes full Bard. Which doesn't really matter. I like the idea. What do you mean going full Bard doesn't matter? Cecil's been great this year. Is he a FA at the end of the year or something?
8D Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Has Cecil mentioned anything about it? I'm really curious if he's into the idea or thinks he'll burn out himself. I'm really curious how he'd do. I'm optimistic. wow.

8D Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 hmmm... not good. Plus, I'm sure Gibby LOVES having him in the pen too; even with this "rotation."
kgm1 Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I think we have come to the point where there are no better options . This season is now about getting a rotation together for next year and blowing an option on stroman makes no sense when he isn't ready . Reason the Rays have had such success is they don't bring up pitchers until they are ready and able to pitch a full season of 180 to 200 innings. Lets face it Johnson and Morrow are = to Rich Hardin, Romero =,s self destruction and Buehrle is a #5 in the AL EAST , Happ a #6 . So much as I hate to screw up a good thing with Cecil in the BP we need starters . MAYBE , We can catch lightning in a bottle with both Cecil and Rogers .
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I wouldn't be opposed to trying out Cecil in the rotation, maybe have him piggy back Redmond's start since we all probably know how that will go.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 They would need to stretch him a few times before they give him a start, kinda like they did with Rogers. So even if it happens, won't be until Wang next start.
