Its the framing people are talking about, not stuff like that.

My bad. My apologies for thinking you were giving the amateur "game calling" narrative.. should have known better

Oh Dougie, the obscure stat guy

It's not that obscure, just not 100% quantified.

David Ross was our man. Good for a 0.330+ wOBA with no platoon splits, great defender via all traditional indicators, plus framer according to Fast's study. I have no idea why this guy can't get a starting gig, but he could well have given us 3+ WAR for <$5 million. And then there's Russell Martin, who's typical 2 fWAR is apparently more like 3-4 WAR. We weren't interested in either though. We had JPA.

You know what's hilariously depressing as f***? Curtis Thigpen saved 3.39 more EstRuns than JPA. CURTIS THIGPEN. It's actually very conceivable that Thigpen was more valuable over 500 PA or whatever benchmark than JPA. He's that bad.

I would gladly trade a guy like Alford or Nay for Hanigan, though, he'd be ridiculous. Geovanni Soto's also apparently pretty good and would go cheap.

How is Iannetta's defense? He's a FA next year and I get the feeling that the Angels don't like him much.

I saw Iannetta on the worse list this year in terms of pitch framing I believe.. along with Matt Wieters who I was surpised about because he seems like a stud back there.

I have a strong feeling that IronLadle is related to Arencibia some way, or a horny broad who wants to be ravaged by him.

I used to hate Arencibia the most, went mental when we traded D'Arnaud - but he ain't that bad for a catcher

I saw that too, I'm pretty sure it's just SSS. Would be surprised if it wasn't. Would kill some of his value, though.

I think he's Dwayne Murphy. Doesn't give a damn about OBP.

He kinda is. He's really, really, really, really...

[...]

... really, really bad for a baseball player in general.

What about Wilson Ramos? Is he any good at this defensive stuff? Nats seem to be a bit spoiled with Ramos + Suzuki but its hard to see what needs they have.

Your crazy to think Thole is an upgrade over J.P

"No one cares about strikeouts other than people that aren’t in the game,” he said, defiantly. “People who understand baseball understand that strikeouts, for myself, really don’t mean as much.”

“For me, I’ll strike out however many times if at the end of the year you’re sitting there with 30 home runs and 100 RBIs.”

Good god.

The guy doesn't care about getting on base or making good contact, but as long as he gets those dingers and ribeyes, he is a top 10 catcher. Twenty six 3 ball counts and he has continuously refused to draw a walk. f*** off clown.

He get's 3-0 counts because pitchers pitch more carefully than they would a Josh Thole - having said that he does swing at a lot of s***

14.3 Estruns, he's an amazing framer, but I think Suzuki (1.6) is more likely.

If you regress Thole to a .315 BABIP...

0.315 (113 - 17 - 4 + 1) + 1 = 29.295

Calling that 30 hits, plus 13 BB, he'd have a .349 OBP.

http://mlsplits.drivelinebaseball.com/mlsplits/mlecalc

If you run his regressed stats into that, he'd have a .297 OBP in the MLB, which is like 50 points higher than JPA's.

Nice edit

Like I said, drunk off my face... I misread what you said at first and then re-read it and decided to try to make myself seem like less of a crazy drunk! :P

Hahahahahahahaha it's okay don't worry about it

I'm about as together as I'm going to be... Thanks for the concern though, bro! :P

I feel like we haven't seen anything yet. JPA's greatest troll job is yet to come. Picture it: the team goes on a run and wins 87 games. Finishes 2 wins back of the WC. JPA catches 140 games. Hits 32 homerz, drives in 85, but sets the record for worst K/BB of all time and finishes with a 0.298 wOBA. Framing metrics become widely accepted, and with them incorporated, JPA finishes with -1.5 WAR. AA praises JPA for his outstanding season and signs him to a multi-year extension.

According to Richard Griffin J.P. will only be accepted as a great catcher if he makes the post season. For once I will accept Griffin's logic. Just because your scenario is to depressing.

If Jays don't make the playofffs no extension for JP no matter what. If they made the playoffs I could atleast accept the extension... maybe. Though Joe Carter's extension after 92 was kindof annoying.

I know "Touch em All Joe" was kindof cool but that one image of Joe jumping up and down has probably influenced J.P. I'm sure there's a mural of it near where they walk in and every day J.P. says "that'll be me one day, just have to be more aggressive, maybe when Joe comes back for old timers day he'll give me some hitting tips."

Good. Anything to put pressure on the Jays to make a move at catcher.

The article does talk about the good and bad.....The Jays need to promote Thole. There is no one pushing him. Blanco isn't going to take his job, at least Thole is young. I would bring up Thole and say to JP you take a walk in the next 5 games or you're sitting for 3 games....you swing at more than 7 pitches out of the strikezone in 5 games and you're sitting 3 days. JP with a quarter of the plate disciple of Jose bautista would be a very good hitter. He has no discipline at the moment and he still has a .731 OPS...he has 30 homerun power. I understand people's frustration with JP. I just about threw my remote through my tv a couple games back because of JP. He doesn't have to develop into a patient hitter. He just needs to have a little more patience and understanding.
