G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 DeRosa is earning his keep. he's the 25th man on the roster and getting paid minimum wage. he's already earned his keep. he's not the problem. lol Yep. Derosa has earned his keep more than probably 4-5 others. Compared to expectations.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 that mistake by Izturis probably earned Boni more playing time. I wish we could get rid of both. Sigh.

jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 DeRosa AB was just brilliant, did absolutely what he needed to do. Peralta didnt throw him a single strike the entire AB and he chased a 1-0 fastball off the plate. He didnt do anything good, just got lucky the pitcher had no command

Caper Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 There is no such thing as a "hot bat". They had to pitch to Bautista, bases-loaded opens up the possibility for a walk-off walk. Of course there is. Bautista had a hot bat. Some one on the Rays forum said the problem with Maddon is that he will see 3/4 and bet he can't go 4/5. Or see a guy walk 3 guys in a row and think there is no way he will walk a 4 th.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Maddon is correct in this instance. The tendency is for most managers to erroneously overreact to "hot streaks", which is akin to expecting a coin that has given you four heads in a row to give you heads again on the next flip. We know what Bautista is - him being 4 for his last 5 should in no way impact what you expect from his next PA. Maddon's understanding of this is just another instance of the Rays being ahead of the curve. I'm not sure I agree with this. I know what you're saying, and with truly random data (flipping a coin or rolling dice) you would be absolutely correct. Getting 99 heads in a row has absolutely no bearing on the probability of getting it again on the 100th try. I would question if this data is really random though, as streaks (especially over several games) for many hitters seem to be largely dependent on their confidence and timing at the plate. In some ways, I think you could consider this "rolling with slightly weighted dice". Would make for an interesting study. I'm not saying that the decision to pitch to Bautista in this case wasn't correct, as I think it was. The increased chance of the Jays winning from an EE walk probably outweighs whatever advantage Jose may have had (if it does in fact exist). I'm also going to throw out the "3 guys in a row" walk portion of the original statement for obvious reasons, although in some ways it is the pitcher equivalent.

Maddon's understanding of this is just another instance of the Rays being ahead of the curve. I would have to disagree, that it equates to a coin flip. I don't think it's as cold as that. You hear NBA players talk about seeing the basket as big as a lake when they feel on.... and you hear similar about baseball players as well. Take Edwin..... when he used to be streaky and was off, you could see it at the plate that he was wayyyyyy off... and like wise when he was on. I am sure that if a player is feeling confidence... and likewise a pitcher is seeing the stats that a batter is putting up... that effects things. In this case Jose fought off a tough pitch for the win.... so the pitcher didn't crumble at all. I wonder if JPA was hitting where Lind was, if Maddon would have walked JB and EE to get to him.
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Tom Tango discusses it in The Book. The conclusion he draws is that "streaks" offer very little predictive value and you're much better off expecting the player's situational norm than reading into what they've done over a recent small sample. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I have a had time believing that streaks have little no value on the performance of players.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 The one pitch he chased could be considered borderline... it was right on the corner. Overall he looked very patient up there. Plus, it was Bucknor behind the plate. Can't assume anything won't be called a strike. And dramatically so.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 DeRosa AB was just brilliant, did absolutely what he needed to do. True. I believe it was 2 out at that time and his getting on base enabled Bautista to come to the plate for the heroic ending.
Figgy1R22R Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 The home plate umpire was unreal last night.. But at least he was consistent. f***ing Buckner.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 that mistake by Izturis probably earned Boni more playing time. The two of them have made some bad plays at 2B so it is still a toss-up even through I believe Izturis will be seeing more time in the infield over Bonifacio.
Figgy1R22R Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Is it just me or does Boni toss the ball to the SS at 2nd base way too often when going for a double play. When you are close to the bag, I get it. But when you are between 2nd and 1st and get a ground ball, wouldn't I don't know, a throw be more efficient?
IBTrini Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I wish we could get rid of both. Sigh. I like what Bonifacio can bring off of the bench more so if he can become better with the bunting. A part of the problem has to do with giving bench players a lot of playing time. At the start of the season it was looking like Izturis' bat would be the only really weak bat however when the Jays lost Reyes and had to replace him with Kawasaki that was a huge hit making that 2 less than ideal bats. With Lawrie also on the DL at that time that meant we had yet another non-starter playing a lot of games. With "gimpy foot" Cabrera being a liability in LF recently the Jays will be losing another potential good bat so now you have 3 offensive holes. Couple that with the others not hitting their stride and the picture becomes even worse. Depth is important and should be planned for managing situations where more than one injury occurs at the same time. I am not suggesting the FO should be paying elite players to sit on the bench just in case injuries happen however the only area which seems to be holding their own is the BP. Santos is not even being missed and when he comes back, if he can stay healthy, he should make the BP even stronger. The starting rotation looked good on the surface even though they started off too slowly they were also hit by multiple injuries (Johnson-triceps inflammation, Happ-Head contusion, Romero-Brain malfunction for want of a better description etc.) making it a depressing revolving door for starters. There is some depth (albeit they too are on the DL) which could potentially be a little better than what the Jays are currently throwing out there now. Anyway, games like this one makes it entertaining even though nail-biting at times. It would be nice to see some blow-out wins however pulling off a win makes for an ecstatic, euphoric, mind-altering moment - very satisfying and worthwhile.

AA said that he can walk on water and feed everyone in the stadium with 1ft Subway foot long. But... but... but, is it really true? Are the 1ft Subways really 12" long as advertised? I think someone has to look into this claim cuz it sounds fishy.

He didnt do anything good, just got lucky the pitcher had no command So he chased 1 pitch out of 5 and that's reason enough to come off negatively? How about being disciplined enough not to try to be the hero and swing at pitches off the plate? How about not only being a team-player but also being patient knowing if the pitcher does not throw something good to hit that the team's big bat will be up next to have a chance to drive in the run? Bautista had a great day but it would have been all for nothing if DeRosa did not get on base. Edited May 23, 2013 by IBTrini double word removed
