I don't even know how we can compensate for a loss this huge

It feels kind of callous to talk about compensation so soon, but that really sucks for Hurl.

I think all know that the obvious solution is for silvergun to give him a similarly valuable player.

We need to discuss reasonable compensation for Fernandez.

Obviously there is no way to compensate even close to his actual value.

We have a bit of a precedent with Taveras.

What is fair and simple?

My idea was to let hurley pick any one available prospect he wants, right now.

I don't think that's nearly enough.

How's the waiver draft looking this year? Letting Hurl add any unowned prospect and giving him #1 pick in the waiver draft seems appropriate. Would be Maitan and some MLB ready Azn guy probably?

We'll also need to write some guidelines for tragedy compensation into the official rules.

Generally speaking:

- The player must be of significant value. We probably won't compensate a 30th overall prospect or someone's SP3.

- The player should not be old, since the careers of old guys do end abruptly sometimes.

- The event should have to be "tragic" in the sense that the dead / injured player is morally innocent; if Michael Kopech becomes an Ace and then gets KO'd and turned into a vegetable in a bar fight, I don't think compensation would be appropriate.

Im guessing this does not include Panda gaining a crap load of weight and killing his career?

I don't think the way in which the player dies should matter. We're not arbiters of moral behaviour.

I think they way they die is important. If my ace shoots up with drugs, gets super addicted and f***s his career, I'm not getting compensation. If he does the same but OD's, I do? Doesn't seem like what we are trying to achieve.

I'm also in favour of firming up the rules for compensation. What qualifies, what preciously the compensation should be. I don't really like the game of trying to compensate depending on just how good the player was. I don't think anyone here would, but I can imagine a situation where someone has to argue about how 'good' his asset was compared to other compensations.

How about if Jose Fernandez gets into a boating accident but instead breaks his arm and turns into Tim Lincecum?

By your argument, I shouldn't have been compensated for Taveras either.

I think we do need to compensate based on how good the player was, but there's no way to really codify that. Honestly these are pretty rare circumstances, this death in particular is unprecedented. Let's just arbitrate it on a case by case basis.

I never had an issue with you being compensated for Taveras, but I don't think this situation is the same.

As an interesting case study. If someone had Josh Hamilton back in the day and he OD'd, would that have been part of the risk of investing in him in dynasty? Or would his owner be entitled to the same compensation vs a situation like this which is seemingly a random and tragic loss?

IMO if any active player of keep quality dies, there should be some sort of compensation. If Mark Teixeira dies today, sorry, I don't think you're getting anything.

I think this should be handled on a case by case basis. And I don't think we should be judging the 'tragicness' of a death. Nobody wants to debate how tragic, say, Oscar Taveras' death was given that he was drunk and killed someone. And I think we have enough collective sense to handle these as they come. Nobody will expect compensation if a Doug Fister gets hit by lightning.

And I think we can agree that it doesn't really get much bigger than Fernandez. Whatever this compensation is will pretty much constitute the upper limit. Hopefully we will never see another Top 10 dynasty asset die during the life of this league.

Yeah I agree that we shouldn't be debating how avoidable or unavoidable the death was. It's more a question of measuring the sudden impact on future value. Is there any reasonably valuable player whose death wouldn't come as a surprise? Is there any reasonably valuable player whose death wouldn't come as a shock? I don't think so. It's not uncommon for young men to engage in risky behaviour and athletes are not immune from that. That doesn't make it reasonable for us to expect them to drop dead at any moment whether it's because of an accident, and O.D., a suicide or any other cause.

Josh Hamilton back in the day. I really think that is the case study. Known ongoing issues with drugs and drinking. I literally wouldn't have been surprised for a second if he OD'd any given day. And he was a top asset. This is the case study.

Yeah maybe Hamilton. You could argue that the know risk factors had already diminished his value somewhat and that any compensation for losing Hamilton at the time would have reflected that so I still think that compensation should have been awarded based on the value of the player. The alternative, as Boxy pointed out, would be the gruesome task of doing morality forensics.

I think you'd 100% have to give compensation. No difference between OD'ing and getting killed while drinking and driving.

I think I'm in the minority, but I don't think I would agree in a case like Hamilton (which isn't a commentary on anyone else).

I am good with whatever you guys decide.

I am good with giving compensation but i don't know how you can compensate for a top 20 player.

You can't, really. Even if we give Hurl 3 1st round picks, his franchise is set back years. Just a s***** situation.
