Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 That was a great presser, the rebuild is truly happening, it's happening, I'm a happy Leaf fan, patience brings fortune. ETA on fans calling for Babcock to be fired? Also, lol @ paying that much for a coach.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 ETA on fans calling for Babcock to be fired? Also, lol @ paying that much for a coach. Mid-Season next year? Who cares what they paid.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Mid-Season next year? Who cares what they paid. If it affects their ability to buy players, you should.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 If it affects their ability to buy players, you should. It doesn't, get out of here, dumn dumn, lol.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Faawk, missed my Golf picks...Godammit, that's like the 3rd or 4th week I've done that.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 If it affects their ability to buy players, you should. It doesn't though since it's a hard cap league. The Maple Leafs essentially print money and will always be right at the cap. If they believe Babcock will improve their team, pretty much any salary is justifiable.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 Jim Paliafito Leafs new AGM Leafs interested in Burmistrov as well. Lol I guess it's not like there's any real risk

Statman Verified Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 If you look at Babcocks resume it is very impressive but when you look further into and look at the front offices with the Anaheim and Detroit and the rosters they acquired and developed, same with the National Team, it wasn't very hard to win. When he took over Detroit there were 5 hall of fame players and two #1 goalies on the roster. Same with the Canadian National Team, not very difficult to win with that roster. IMO Babcock is fools gold and I don't think his success which coincidentally coached teams with two of the best front offices in hockey is going to translate well in Toronto.

Isn't the Leafs FO pretty decent though? I don't follow hockey but aren't the Leafs one of the more analytic friendly teams now?

Babcock's roster was weaker last year and the team's possession numbers were still in line with year's past, fwiw. Isn't the Leafs FO pretty decent though? I don't follow hockey but aren't the Leafs one of the more analytic friendly teams now? Certainly.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Also à propos of nothing, I sure hope I don't look like Mike Babcock when I'm 52. He looks like a piece of meat that's been left out in the sun.
Statman Verified Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Isn't the Leafs FO pretty decent though? I don't follow hockey but aren't the Leafs one of the more analytic friendly teams now? They hired some guy from Brock University for analytics but other than that Shanahan and company are unproven at this point. What is scary and I don't know how much influence guys like Babcock have on farms systems and player development but the leafs have a history of not being able to develop their own players which will be crucial for this rebuild. The Red Wings and Anaheim had superb front offices during his stays.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Still looks younger than Jack Armstrong and he's 52 also. Armstrong has lighter hair maybe that's why you think he looks older but he has much better skin than Babcock.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 I love Babcock, every f***ing interview, he's top notch.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 This team is moving forward Leaf fans...Booyah! Patience, please.

Statman Verified Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Food for thought on Babcock. I totally agree with this writer. http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/good-luck-with-the-maple-leafs-mike-babcock-youre-going-to-need-it/
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Author Posted May 22, 2015 Put it this way. The Leafs were the fourth worst team in the NHL last season. It would not be a stretch to suggest that with some creative “roster management,” they could have fallen further down the standings in 2015-16. Now, under Babcock, they’ll probably be better. Not much, but enough to take them out of the running for such high-level talents as Auston Matthews, Jesse Puljujarvi, Jakob Chychrun and Matthew Tkachuk – each and every one a franchise cornerstone stud. Now we're worried about the Leafs not being bad enough? Lol where there's a will there's definitely a f***ing way to lose with the Leafs. If they want one of those guys bad enough, they'll get them. Being bad enough certainly is NOT a concern for the Leafs right now. Trade Bernier and JVR and this team already slips way down. Get fair value for Kessel and we give Buffalo a run for their money.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Trade Bernier and JVR and this team already slips way down. Get fair value for Kessel and we give Buffalo a run for their money. Would you actually trade Benier? I wouldnt. Trading Kessel would be more than enough IMO to put them bottom 5 in the standings again.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Author Posted May 22, 2015 Would you actually trade Benier? I wouldnt. Trading Kessel would be more than enough IMO to put them bottom 5 in the standings again. I don't nearly have enough knowledge to know if it'd be wise to trade Bernier. I have no idea what teams would give up or how long they want the rebuild could last. If they got a USEFUL package, not a second round pick or some ********, and they wanted like a 5 year rebuild when Bernier might be getting up there, I'd probably deal him. If we got a couple draft picks and we were going for like a 3 year rebuild, I wouldn't. I'm sure we could get another goalie within 5 years, lol.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Good on the Leafs for using their bottomless pit of money to their advantage. With the hard cap system in place, the next best thing to do is acquire the best talent for your F.O., scouting, player development, and coaching staff. MLSE uses $100 bills as toilet paper, so that contract isn't an issue to them.
