They saved money, and will save even more if they buyout Gaborik at season's end. It seems as though that's their main motivator in this one.

 

I wouldn't have expected Phaneuf to bring back much value, his contract was an anchor and I'm sure the whole league was aware they'd be happy to get rid of it.

They save $4M or so in real money, but Phaneuf is a better player despite being overpaid. There's like 0 chance Melnyk buys out Gaborik, but apparently he might retire after the season, which would be fantastic.
