JG34 Verified Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 It's the result of those games being an 'event' for Leafs fans. They come in from out of town to see their team because it's easier and cheaper than getting tickets in Toronto, and spend the night in the city. A bunch of young guys on a night away are going to have a lot of drinks, so you have young drunk guys acting like drunken idiots. Most people try to avoid those games because of it. I don't even have kids and if I see 3-5 games a year I prefer that none are Leafs games. Obviously every fanbase has idiots, but the fact that tickets are cheaper in Ottawa than Toronto just creates a perfect storm for the CTC to be overrun with idiots in Leafs jerseys. ^ Same goes for Buffalo.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 I was moreso going from the perspective of other teams' fans towards Leafs fans, not generalizing Leafs fans myself as every team had "those fans". Every teams fans hate the big, legacy franchises. Yankees, Red Sox, Cowboys, Giants, Leafs, Habs... It's just how it is. Every opportunity is taken to hate on anything and everything. 'Matthews will be a bust'. 'Giving up another 1st rounder for a backup goalie'. 'Babcock is the world's biggest dbag now that he's the Leafs coach'. We're used to it. Me cheering for my team to lose the past couple of seasons was for the greater good. Adding core talent via the FA market is really not an option, and trading for it is exceptionally difficult too. The vast majority of teams build their cores by drafting and developing. Best way to do this is to pick early and often. So, I get that it's counter intuitive to cheer against your team, but if you can get past your gut reaction and realize that it's a longer term plan, is something you can get behind knowing that a talented core can new assembled... Which, most understand, is just the first step of many.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Anaheim really got screwed last night.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Jose Bautista and Gronk are minority owners of the new Vegas team.
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Matthews having a game for himself. Good to see.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 I actually like the logo. I have a soft spot for gimmicks that hide letters or negative images in the main logo. Like the FedEx logo, or the Milwaukee Brewer glove, or the Atlanta Falcon 'F' bird. Full disclosure: I didn't realize what the Falcon was until last year. I saw a guy walk by in a Falcon jacket, then it hit me and I almost dropped my coffee. Also, why the f*** is there an NHL team in Vegas? Is there seriously a desire for hockey there? What about, like, Seattle or something?

What about, like, Seattle or something? They wanted to be the first major sports team in the market. First one in, wins... Or so the thought is. Vegas is an event town. They're hoping they can package hockey with the existing culture and people will include a hockey game as one of their nights out when visiting the city. I haven't a clue whether it'll be successful or not, but I'm not as opposed to it as I was when I heard Anaheim or Columbus, or Florida... or the rumored Kansas City.

Probably mostly hotels, travel companies, etc. for giveaways but regardless owners don't care who buys them. Getting people to actually go to the games might be a different challenge though.

It's a perfect move for Vegas. Do you know how easy it's going to be to convince Torontonians to come down to Vegas to see the Leafs play the Vegas team, and do a s***-ton of gambling while they are at it?

Well... being that they are in the Western Conference, we're talking 1 game in Vegas and I'd guess about a 33% chance it's on a weekend.

Still, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg will all use the games as an excuse to fly down and do some gambling/whoring while they are there.

That's the problem. Shouldn't need an excuse to do that. Whoring and gambling FTW

Probably though I definitely wouldn't bank on Canadians filling the arena. I think hotels bought up a lot of the season tickets and will be including them in various packages, there's got to be millions of international travelers going to Vegas every year who have never seen a hockey game in their life and would probably check it out. I know a minority stake owner who bought 40 season tickets to give to children charities and underprivileged kids in the city who have never seen a hockey game in their life. Doing his part to help introduce hockey to the city which is pretty cool.
Frag Verified Member Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Like the logo. Don't like the name. Why just Vegas?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Like the logo. Don't like the name. Why just Vegas? Cause there wasn't any other city bidding that would fit in the Western conference... And they're not gonna move Detroit back there again. Even with Vegas they're still 1 team short in the West if they're looking for balance.

They are the Vegas Golden Knights.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Leafs suspended Garret Sparks for his comments on a facebook group defending a disabled person, all while insulting 13 year old girls http://www.tsn.ca/sparks-suspended-indefinitely-by-maple-leafs-1.617534 TORONTO – Toronto Marlies’ goaltender Garret Sparks has been suspended indefinitely by the Toronto Maple Leafs for violating team policy after directing violent and sexist language toward a user in an online group. Sparks did not dress for the Marlies on Friday or Saturday. “[Garret] was sent home for some team policy reasons when we were on the road trip there [in New York],” Keefe said after Saturday’s 4-1 win over the Utica Comets. “I’m familiar with the circumstances, but we’re not going to comment any further from there. Management handled the situation.” The Maple Leafs released a statement saying they were aware of the incident and that it had been addressed directly with Sparks. The suspension stems from an incident that came to light on November 22. According to users in a Facebook goalie group for which Sparks is an administrator, members of the forum were mocking a disabled person and Sparks came to that person’s defence by asking one of those in the forum where he lived and writing, “I want to go to open hockey with you, drag you out to center ice and beat you into a [expletive] pulp until you can’t run that [expletive] little mouth of yours. God, you sound like a 13-year-old girl.” When another member reprimanded Sparks for insulting women, he apologized and continued, “Girls don’t even whine as much as this guy does.” Keefe said there is no timetable for the goalie’s return. His status will be reevaluated by the team in the next week. Sparks could not be reached for comment. The 23-year old native of Elmhurst, Illinois played 17 games for the Maple Leafs last season, posting a 6-9-1 record, 3.02 goals-against average and .893 save percentage. Slowed by an injury this season, Sparks has seen limited action, going 3-1-0 with a 2.02 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 He said nothing that wasn't completely accurate... But he shouldn't have said it. I have a 13 year old daughter. She's a whiner.
JG34 Verified Member Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I can see from an organizational standpoint how this is unacceptable. Sparks shouldn't have made those comments, even though he was defending someone.
