It doesn't though since it's a hard cap league. The Maple Leafs essentially print money and will always be right at the cap.

 

If they believe Babcock will improve their team, pretty much any salary is justifiable.

If you look at Babcocks resume it is very impressive but when you look further into and look at the front offices with the Anaheim and Detroit and the rosters they acquired and developed, same with the National Team, it wasn't very hard to win. When he took over Detroit there were 5 hall of fame players and two #1 goalies on the roster. Same with the Canadian National Team, not very difficult to win with that roster.

 

IMO Babcock is fools gold and I don't think his success which coincidentally coached teams with two of the best front offices in hockey is going to translate well in Toronto.

Babcock's roster was weaker last year and the team's possession numbers were still in line with year's past, fwiw.

They hired some guy from Brock University for analytics but other than that Shanahan and company are unproven at this point. What is scary and I don't know how much influence guys like Babcock have on farms systems and player development but the leafs have a history of not being able to develop their own players which will be crucial for this rebuild. The Red Wings and Anaheim had superb front offices during his stays.

Put it this way. The Leafs were the fourth worst team in the NHL last season. It would not be a stretch to suggest that with some creative “roster management,” they could have fallen further down the standings in 2015-16. Now, under Babcock, they’ll probably be better. Not much, but enough to take them out of the running for such high-level talents as Auston Matthews, Jesse Puljujarvi, Jakob Chychrun and Matthew Tkachuk – each and every one a franchise cornerstone stud.

 

Now we're worried about the Leafs not being bad enough? Lol where there's a will there's definitely a f***ing way to lose with the Leafs. If they want one of those guys bad enough, they'll get them. Being bad enough certainly is NOT a concern for the Leafs right now.

I don't nearly have enough knowledge to know if it'd be wise to trade Bernier. I have no idea what teams would give up or how long they want the rebuild could last. If they got a USEFUL package, not a second round pick or some ********, and they wanted like a 5 year rebuild when Bernier might be getting up there, I'd probably deal him. If we got a couple draft picks and we were going for like a 3 year rebuild, I wouldn't.

 

I'm sure we could get another goalie within 5 years, lol.

Good on the Leafs for using their bottomless pit of money to their advantage. With the hard cap system in place, the next best thing to do is acquire the best talent for your F.O., scouting, player development, and coaching staff. MLSE uses $100 bills as toilet paper, so that contract isn't an issue to them.
