I think I heard the NHLPA would piss and moan or something about OT being too long. I guess that makes sense from a labour standpoint.

 

From a pure entertainment standpoint, I'd much rather see 3 on 3 than another f***ing shootout.

 

I agree. Shootouts should be rare... I don't have the stats but as it is I think they must occur much more often than OT resolutions.

Are you opposed to 3 on 3 mostly because it's basically as gimmicky as a shootout? Or are you just being a wet blanket?

1 on 1 would actually be better than a shootout, lol.

 

When I was 11 we were in the finals of a tournament and the OT format was 5v5 for 5 minutes, 4v4 for 4 minutes, 3v3 for 3, 2v2 for 2, and then 1v1 for 1 minute until someone scored.

 

I got the second shift of the 1 on 1. Got the faceoff, turned around in my own zone to get some speed, and then tried to hows-she-goin the other guy but f***ed up and hit his skate. He obviously kicked it forward for a breakaway and scored. In hindsight, I made a terrible choice - should have protected the puck more than anything and just tried to burn him wide.

 

I still have nightmares about it. This is why I'm risk-averse to a fault, to this day.

I think it's super gimmicky, yeah. But less gimmicky than a shootout.

 

I just f***ing love endless OT in playoff hockey. It's my favourite sports thing.

I also played in one of those formatted tourneys way back in the day. Don't think it ever got down to 1 on 1 though.

 

At least now I know why you're so messed up! Thanks for sharing Mr. Broken.

I think a large part of my hatred for shootouts is that they're largely fantasy irrelevant.

Similar experience here. I was 13 I think, playing in the knockout round of a tournament, Select level. The OT format was something like 10 minutes total, dropping by one player every two minutes. I'd played about 5 or 6 minutes out of the 8 minutes leading up to the final 1 vs 1, including almost the whole 2 vs 2. When the coach asked me if I could go, of course I said yes but I was totally gassed. Lost the face-off but kept him in front of me, he came in 1:1 against me, I forced him to the outside and we circled around the net but he just had a little more and got out in front and chipped it over the goalie.

 

It was one of those unique experiences that you remember. Always regret not giving the ice to one of the fresher guys for even, what, 30 seconds? One skate up and down the ice would have been enough time to recover. It didn't change me in any way though, I still take on too much even when my chances of being successful are small. Might be a fear of letting people down or an overconfidence in my abilities or perhaps just an ego-driven desire to be a hero, I don't know. I usually don't recognize it until afterwards.

ACL/MCL/PCL/QX90CL I blew em all, and thinking of it makes me physically squirm 15 years on!

What? If Edmonton turned that down they might as well fold the franchise.

 

McDavid is maybe the best prospect ever but that does not guarantee he's even going to become a top 10 guy in the league.

 

Edmonton is a pretty terrible franchise... Never guarenteed hes going to be anything, but I really can't see him not being a stud if he stays healthy. Has all the tools and a terrific work ethic and makeup. He's probably one of the fastest players in the game right now even at his age.

I am calling it Buffalo gets McDavid, Eichel goes to Arizona.... However you guys are going to get a fine defensive player in Ivan Provorov..... The guy is an absolute beauty. I think he would look pretty good on the Leafs blue line.
