Often I see "x player" has given up 15 shot attempts against and therefore is having a s*** game.

This is my biggest pet peeve by far about the hockey analytics blogosphere right now. Past "advanced" stats = true talent = future performance in way too many of these guys' eyes.

 

Agreed on the player tracking stuff. That will obviously be awesome.

A metric he jokingly named "Tango", which weight goals more heavily and shots/missed shots/blocked shots less heavily.

 

The weird thing is that the people responding to him seem to actually be calling it "Tango" as if they don't get he's making fun of the silliness that is hockey analytics naming conventions.

 

And agreed re: what you said in the other post. Some of these guys have no idea how to actually test their "models". They press "go" on their regression, see a correlation and start quoting that as gospel.

 

Hopefully Tango fixes War-on-ice's path to WAR series of posts too. They're exceptionally smart guys but they're aiming to create something that is pretty different than what Tango et al created in baseball.

Suddenly the lack of hockey projections make a lot more sense.

Mika Zibanejad had a pretty good game tonight. While we are talking about Advanced Stats might as well bring up that Erik Karlsson had 23 shot attempts for tonight. Many people are saying the highest ever for one player in a game.

What a joke. Management and Ownership continue to scapegoat another coach for their mistakes. This just isn't a talented team.

 

Bryan Murray about to hire his 5th head coach in less than 8 seasons as GM. 4 (likely) missed playoffs in 8 years, and one series win. Two captains have found the situation toxic enough to leave town.

 

This is a bad, bad situation.

I blame Murray more than Mclean but the organization's failure starts at the top with Melnyk. The owner would rather make the playoffs as a bottom seed year than truly rebuild and get the impact talent it needs in the draft. This team is headed on a Maple Leafs treadmill unless real changes are made.

Yeah, that's what's frustrating. Murray hasn't done a good job, but they don't really have a chance as long as Melnyk is owner. They have the lowest payroll in the NHL. When you're spending less than Phoenix, Florida, Nashville in a contention season, it's time to sell the team. Melnyk is just a loathsome person.

Worst part is he says he loses money. Not a chance in hell he loses money when he owns the building and gets revenue from concessions, parking etc... Not to mention TSN payed around 30 million for the TV rights. Then lies about everything.

Latvia spamming the fan vote. Fan voting should really be stopped but it never will since it creates more viewers and hits on the webpages.

Agree. The owner has made being a GM for that franchise much harder, but Murray has made some terrible decisions lately. Worst part is that apparently Melnyk wanted Maclean fired last year and Murray had to fight for Maclean to give him another chance. Maclean being fired has more to do with Melnyk than with Murray.
