havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 The Toronto Maple Leafs re-signed defenceman Carl Gunnarsson to a three-year, $9.45-million deal Monday, according to Hockey Central insider Nick Kypreos. Very good signing.

Frag Verified Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 So, since Steve Burtch did his Shutdown Index over at PPP, I expanded on his study by looking at adjusted overall Corsi. Like him, I adjusted for quality of teammates (TMCF/A20), quality of competition (OppCF/A20), and zone starts (he did DZFO% only, while I included NZFO% since it was also significant). Here are the top/bottom forwards and defencemen with this measure (I'm basically calling it dCorsi/20, which is the sum of SDI or dCA/20 and dCF/20). This is an accumulation of all seasons since 2007-08 and a minimum of 2000 minutes total: Forwards: Top 20: 1 WILLIAMS, JUSTIN 2 BERGERON, PATRICE 3 HALL, TAYLOR 4 SEDIN, DANIEL 5 KUNITZ, CHRIS 6 ZHERDEV, NIKOLAI 7 MOSS, DAVID 8 ELIAS, PATRIK 9 PONIKAROVSKY, ALEXEI 10 BERGENHEIM, SEAN 11 GETZLAF, RYAN 12 SEDIN, HENRIK 13 KENNEDY, TYLER 14 PACIORETTY, MAX 15 BOOTH, DAVID 16 HORNQVIST, PATRIC 17 HUNTER, TRENT 18 GRABOVSKI, MIKHAIL 19 EBERLE, JORDAN 20 PERRY, COREY Bottom 20: 367 MARCHANT, TODD 368 ADAMS, CRAIG 369 MILLER, DREW 370 KOBASEW, CHUCK 371 STEWART, CHRIS 372 BOZAK, TYLER 373 BROWN, MIKE 374 PISANI, FERNANDO 375 MOREAU, ETHAN 376 MAYERS, JAMAL 377 DRURY, CHRIS 378 ORR, COLTON 379 FILPPULA, VALTTERI 380 SUTTER, BRANDON 381 BERTUZZI, TODD 382 GLASS, TANNER 383 DRAPER, KRIS 384 KORPIKOSKI, LAURI 385 HANDZUS, MICHAL 386 JOHANSSON, MARCUS Defencemen: 1 CHARA, ZDENO 2 SUBBAN, P.K. 3 WEBER, SHEA 4 HEDMAN, VICTOR 5 SUTER, RYAN 6 VISNOVSKY, LUBOMIR 7 MARTIN, PAUL 8 LETANG, KRIS 9 BYFUGLIEN, DUSTIN 10 MEYER, FREDDY 11 HAMHUIS, DAN 12 COBURN, BRAYDON 13 BOYCHUK, JOHNNY 14 NIEDERMAYER, SCOTT 15 PIETRANGELO, ALEX 16 GOLIGOSKI, ALEX 17 DOUGHTY, DREW 18 GREEN, MIKE 19 RANGER, PAUL 20 PRONGER, CHRIS Bottom 20: 212 ORPIK, BROOKS 213 ERSKINE, JOHN 214 FINGER, JEFF 215 EMINGER, STEVE 216 HANNAN, SCOTT 217 WEBER, MIKE 218 SKRASTINS, KARLIS 219 PECKHAM, THEO 220 MURRAY, DOUGLAS 221 SALVADOR, BRYCE 222 SOPEL, BRENT 223 EATON, MARK 224 MCKEE, JAY 225 SBISA, LUCA 226 WHITNEY, RYAN 227 MARA, PAUL 228 STUART, BRAD 229 JOHNSON, JACK 230 STRUDWICK, JASON 231 HAVELID, NICLAS

Frag Verified Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Passes the sniff test with flying colours (i.e., agrees with my preconceived notions of who sucks and who rocks) I tried to do a similar study last year with Behind the Net's data, but it didn't pass the smell test for me and others I showed the data to. Their QoT stats don't tease out the player's effects on their teammate's Corsi, which Hockey Analysis did do thankfully.

I followed up by converting dCorsi into dGD, then determined the differential between dGDwoSH% (SH% and SV% are both league average) and dGDwSH% (Only SV% is league average; player's SH% is multiplied with dCF) which I'll call deltaGD at the moment because I can't think of anything original right now. This could be interpreted as being due to the lower average SH% relative to forwards, which itself is the result of longer shot distances from defencemen.

Frag Verified Member Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 I am trying to follow along but have no f***ing clue what all these abbreviations mean. CA20 = Corsi Against per 20 minutes CF20 = Corsi For per 20 minutes Opp20CF/A = Corsi For/Against of opposition when player not on ice TMCF/A = Teammates' Corsi For/Against when player not on ice Hope that helps.
Frag Verified Member Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) Now Steve Burtch found something interesting. When you include TOI into the regression, CF20 for forwards shoots up the R^2 value to 59% (goes up even further if you include OppCF20, which surprised me a bit). The effect isn't seen when you run a regression on CA20, which suggests that coaches have some understanding on utilizing the offensive side of their forwards' game. However, coaches really aren't that good at utilizing the defensive side of their forwards' game. The effect was seen among defencemen CF20 (R^2 up from 54% to 56%), but wasn't as prominent as it was for forwards (up from 55% to 59%). Edited August 3, 2013 by Frag
