Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Hahaha.......and Mohyou/Clogers the dogg and zee, roam free?! GHEY!!!! If and when anyone steps the line temporary bans will be the norm at the minimum. Some of the regulars on this board have gotten away with much worse and think they are immune. We try to be fair, but if people just want to complain about everything and not appreciate what we do then why cut any slack for anyone? Harmless or not, it's f***ing BS.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Real talk: This place's sole reason for existing isn't baseball talk. Quite honestly, there are better places to discuss some of the finer points of the game (The Book blog etc) but they can be pretty dry. Humour has always been a large part of this board's appeal to me and I'm guessing other would echo that sentiment. Banning legitimate posters for an obvious, inoffensive joke seems like a pretty misguided improvement strategy. 5 days was probably a bit excessive, but 24 hours would have perhaps been appropriate. I like having some of the humor etc, but threads continually being hijacked by people with their little pissing matches (or who's only purpose is to tick people off rather than actually support a position or contribute to the community) makes people wade through piles of crap they aren't here for. There's definitely a lot of people who should have gotten a time out before NJH did imo. Still, directing it at a mod (even partially in joking) wasn't the brightest thing in the world.

Oh it's 5 days? Lol I didn't know it was that long. Given the content of those posts and the precedent it sets, that's patently absurd. Furthermore when you take into account that: A) NJH was voted by his peers as the board's best poster he's one of the board proprietor's main sources of potential future income C) This ban effectively occludes one of Breaking Blue's top writers from contributing It comes across as plainly stupid.

Here, any number of trolls we tried to get away from are given free reign to post whatever they want but don't be mean or antagonize the mods! Giving a ban to, statistically, the board's favourite poster and second most popular blogger over something so goddamn trivial is bloody pathetic. I guess we can start preparing for the eventual ban on Spanky. If the board is going to turn into this nonsensical, hard-assed place I will just stop posting here and find a board where the mods don't have broomsticks up their asses.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Take my 'thanks' on the above njh support posts as my vote. That ban was dumb. don't be butt hurt by what seemed to me to be a joke.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Just so some know what's happened from a Mod's side of things. There were some odd things about NJH's account, GSnarls sent him a message about the ban and let him know he'd set up a timer on the ban and explained why it happened. Somehow NJH's account is coming back as blocking all messages (no one should be able to block messages from mods). It was set up so he could still access the blog...but that didn't work. Now I can't moderate NJH's account at all. We are trying to see if others can. Once Admin is back on I'm sure we'll get this settled so at a minimum NJH can access the blog.

Was NJH's username always in red letters? I thought that was kind of odd and at first I thought it was another NJH that was being banned. The posts didn't strike me as especially NJH like.
admin Site Manager Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 NJH's ban was a one day ban, I lifted his ban. Since we don't have give temp bans, we don't really have a set number of days, so I think one was enough. Gnarls felt a temp ban was warranted, and I will stand by his decision. The moderators discuss issues, and problems with members in the mods forum, and believe me, the last thing we want to do is ban people. NJH is one of our top posters, but at the same time we can't give veterans more slack than new guys. Gnarls could see the direction this board has been heading the last while and he put a stop to it. If we start banning some guys for some things and not other guys, the board will turn into a s*** show. I don't know the context of NJH's posts, but "mods are pussies" usually doesn't mean well. Now let's get this post back about baseball.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Red letters means banned. Thy turned red when gsnarls banned him. After I posted, I wondered if it wasn't something like that. I don't have a problem with gsnarls banning someone popular just to show that he's serious but the length was excessive and the gesture is meaningless unless he puts the hammer down on some real problem posters. Edit: Posted before I read admin's comment.
Nox Verified Member Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 the gesture is meaningless unless he puts the hammer down on some real problem posters. . That's the biggest problem. But if it was only ever intended to be a one day ban, it was definitely worth the comedy.

admin Site Manager Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 I think one or two day bans are fair and get the point across. s*** I think I gave boxcar three days.... board seemed so much better during those days!

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun hears that the Orioles "seem to be turning their attention" to Fernando Rodney with Grant Balfour's deal "in limbo and likely collapsing." Balfour's two-year, $15 million contract was supposed to be announced by now, but concerns over his shoulder have left the deal as a longshot at this point. Connolly notes that the O's had discussions earlier this offseason about Rodney, "but negotiations didn't progress." Rodney blew eight saves last season for the Rays but h

A new member with ten posts comes to the board comes and says f*** you admin, you f***ing suck s***. And I ban the new guy, but not the veteran. What does that say to new members of the board? I can't say what I want but guys who have been here longer can? Why would new members stick around if that's the case? And if veterans get treated differently, where do you draw the line? Do you draw the line at the guy who has been here six months? What if he has 10 posts? What if he has 1000 posts, but there are all garbage posts? Do we evaluate his posts to see if he should be banned or not? That doesn't make sense to me.

Nox Verified Member Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 I've never seen, heard of or participated in a real world organization where everyone is treated on a level playing field. To think that structure should work best here is fairly quixotic.

If someone comes in and antogonizes people right off the bat, I don't see why we should care what message we are sending to a person that is probably undesirable in the first place but I honestly don't want to argue this with you because I think it probably comes down to different world views. I think blindly following rules make people do really dumb counter-productive things and I would prefer a system that give mods more freedom even if that means they may make mistakes or appear inconsistent but that's just me. I'm not interested in being argumentative or unsuportive. I wanted to express my point of view and I'm satisfied that I did.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 How many mods are really needed anyway? Chappy/Hurl/Juiced is a level-headed triumvirate and more than enough cooks in the kitchen.

Ok, then why wasn't that enough in NJH's case? If someone doesn't like the occasional pithy quip, can't they just ignore him?

There's a difference between challenging a mod/swearing excessively ( thats why I believe he did) and just being an idiot. At least thats my perspective behind it. I wouldnt have banned anyone but thats just my take on it.
