LunchBox Verified Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I don't know how it's possible to be more than 2 times worse than the next worse player at something in a season (2008). On the topic of shocking stats, a commenter on a recent fangraphs chat claimed that Barry Bonds has a career .335ish OBP vs pitchers he never recorded a hit against.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 BerniePleskoff #Dbacks reach agreement with 3B Eric Chavez to return. Provides depth in wake of Davidson trade. Terrific off/def player if not over used.

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Heh, back and forth, back and forth. Exactly. I'm not going to believe anything on Tanaka until they announce their decision officially.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Exactly. I'm not going to believe anything on Tanaka until they announce their decision officially. Possible outcome. Rakuten stay with Tanaka one more year in Japan, get a lot of money by marketing Tanaka in Japan, then, auction in the 2015.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Another LOL from Glieb: "Ryan Howard does still live." Ruben Amaro Jr. defends his roster: Read more on Philly.com › "We've had great support from our fans and they've been very supportive of our players," Amaro said. "But they have to understand that Ryan Howard does still live. He exists and he’s still part of our club. He's one of the most important parts of our club. "Will Ryan Howard hit 58 home runs? I doubt it. If he hits 30 home runs, I’ll take it. And that's exactly what I'm looking for from him."

I think we won't see Tanaka getting posted this year. Rakuten will still get the same 20Million next offseason, but by holding onto him for 1 more season they stand to benefit more. He'll be great for marketing purposes and they'll be able to make another run at the championship.

Then they are stuck with an 8MM bill for a lost season and no posting fee. There is also the future value to consider. 20M you get today is worth at least 1M more than 20M you get next year.

Well I guess that's a risk they are willing to take. I imagine they'd still get some cash next year for a posting fee even if he did blow his arm out. Teams would still be willing to take the risk, Tanaka would be the one most hurt in that scenario as he'd get a lot lower contract.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 "Mariners officials are signaling to agents and others in the industry that they could be nearing their payroll limit, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal opines that, if true, this makes the decision to spent the majority of their available funds on Robinson Cano shows that there was no plan in place for the Mariners." If that is it... terrible offseason. They still have a few players to trade though

Do you really sign ONE GUY knowing it will make you hit your payroll max, when you have 4-5 other needs as well? Wow that's a terrible idea.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 I bet this is posturing from the M's to get someone to sign.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 The Mariners are a disaster. The only smart move by the M's was to give a QO to Morales and they were lucky he turned it down.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 M's are f***ed if this is the case. They needed to add way more than Cano. Now they have a piss poor contract and I would bet 300 that they will not make the playoffs.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Yep. How could they possibly finish ahead of Oakland or Texas? Walker and Paxton come up and kick some ass. That would be one way. A Felix, Iwakuma, Walker, Paxton could be pretty dirty. Unlikely with 2 rookies however.

Unlikely with 2 rookies however. Cards gave over 500 innings to rookies last year. No one should be holding back rookies because they think they should be competing. If they have the talent, or at least more talent than what the options are...put the rookies in.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 King, Iwakuma, Walker, Ramirez, Paxton is a pretty good rotation. I like Maurer guy
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Their pitching is good but for position players they only upgraded in an area that they were fine in lol (Franklin, Ackley) If their younger guys make a big contribution (paxton, Maurer, zunino, Smoak) If Hart and Guti can stay healthy that is also important They should still be okay.
