NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Oh alright, Harper because he's young and sexy. He has some sneaky speed too, there's potential there for a seven-category contributor down the road.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Ibanez for <3M is not a bad deal. He still hit pretty well last year in a huge park.
Nox Verified Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I could agree with Harper. But not Stanton. They're only seperated by 3 years of age. McCutchen plays CF while Stanton is only OF. I'd probably rank them Trout>>Harper>McCutchen>Stanton. And you can never forget about Miguel Cabrera, I bet he goes somewhere in there. OF vs CF replacement level in fantasy is almost a wash. It's not like real baseball. Stanton is 3 years younger and projects to give you about 10-20 additional points of wOBA. If it's a garbage 5 category league with SBs being skewed heavily then there's a case for McCutchen but that's really the only way a rational argument can be made. Trout > Stanton > Harper > McCutchen And yah, Miggy is definitely in there somewhere too.

What's so amazing about Harper exactly? I mean sure he's young but should that justify passing over better player like McCutchen or even Miguel Cabrera? Trout is a no brainer at 1 because he's good and young but after him, I would look at youth as a tie-breaker not the end all and be all.

He wasn't even the best hitter on the team.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Guti signed for 1 million + incentives.. sounds like he owed the team another year with a friendly contract. I would have paid more for him as a bench
Nox Verified Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 What's so amazing about Harper exactly? I know Trout's craziness kind of blunts anything else that the other young guys do but Harper was a 37% above league average hitter as a 20 year old last season (without any obvious luck red flags). That's pretty nuts.

That's pretty nuts. Don't get me wrong, he's good but I think it's a mistake to project big improvement because of his youth. I'd draft him for the player he is not the mythical player he was touted as (which Trout turned out to actually be).
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Does Paul Goldschmidt go in the top 6?

I'd draft him for the player he is not the mythical player he was touted as (which Trout turned out to actually be). If he doesn't improve at all, that's a really, really nice floor (injuries aside). Real baseball for a second: 8.5 WAR through someone's age 20 season is pretty much mythical.

Real baseball for a second: 8.5 WAR through someone's age 20 season is pretty much mythical. To put it differently... Do I think Harper can be as good as Miguel Cabrera? Perhaps you do but I don't so I'm not passing on Cabrera to draft Harper. I'm going to worry about putting the best team on the field today not whether I still have control on Harper fifteen years from now. Edit: I'm also not inclined to view what Harper is doing now as a great floor but more a case of a player who is going to hit his ceiling early. I don't know how strong the case really is for projecting improvement on someone who starts this good. I certainly wouldn't project improvement on Trout so I'm not sure why I would project it on Harper.
Nox Verified Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 To put it differently... Do I think Harper can be as good as Miguel Cabrera? I would be surprised if Harper reached Cabrera's level of excellence at the plate (all we care about in fantasy). Taking Cabrera over Harper doesn't seem wrong to me. I've been beating the Harper drum in favour of him over McCutchen as that was the original comparison. I'd take Cabrera over McCutchen too.
Nox Verified Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 (edited) If you assume that the league will exist still in 20 years, you would take Harper over Cabrera every time. But that's usually a pretty stupid assumption to make as quite a few of these leagues only end up lasting 2 or 3 years. That changes the calculus significantly when determining the value of future vs. current fantasy points/wins/zscores. Edited December 18, 2013 by Nox

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I won't post who I think should be 2-5 lol. Yeah, me neither. Hard to argue too much with the options being talked about in some order though. Anyhow, everyone knows you'd probably take a pitcher

Any time I'm making a movie in dynasty leagues, I make it assuming the league will still be existent 20 years from now. That's why I'd probably take both Harper and Stanton over Cabrera. I don't think either of them will ever put up Cabrera lines in their careers, but I value 10-12 years of good/great production over 4-5 years of elite production.
