It will cost them a ton of $$ if they don't but Steinbrenner Jr. is saying they won't reduce it below that threshold if it means fielding an "uncompetitive" team.

To field the same team next year (a team that cost a ton of money and missed the playoffs) will easily cost 100M more. To make it better??? Who knows.

The Yankees have no trouble attracting free agents so they could buy a good team for next year. But it will cost a shitload of money. And it might not work if they keep signing these older guys like Ichiro and Youkilis. Cause even their franchise players like Jeter and CC may never be the same again.

Signing Tanaka and acquiring Bailey is one of the few ways our rotation could realistically be passable next year.

I'd probably put Drabek and Hutch ahead of Happ. I really don't like the though of him being anywhere near the rotation next year.

I do agree that a #3 or better starter is a must for this team. I don't really know if you can bank on much more than that. At least you have the potential for a decent rotation with

Buehrle

some combo of Stroman, Happ, Drabek, Hutch, McGowan, etc, etc...

 

Depending on the quality of the FA starter, you have at least 2 guys who have the possibility of being #2+ guys in Morrow and Dickey.

 

We aren't going to get an entire new and shiny rotation. Some bounce-back or luck is a requisite to us competing.

They add up to 90, not 75. And you only get them at those prices if you backload the contracts with more expensive years then those. You also left out Jeter. He brings that group to 100 right there. Plus they have some arbitration eligible players.

The Arbitration numbers are just guesses. That's 13 players for a total of 111.4 Million.

 

And does anyone know if Wells and Soriano's full year salary total count on the Yankees Luxury Tax or just what the Yankees pay?

I think Hutch is going to be knocking on the door during ST I honestly believe he is going to be a #3 type starter for a contending team. Depends on what the team wants to do. Is K numbers are still up and BB are not. I think it is just a matter of him finding his touch like he was just before he got hurt. However you are right. I can see Johnson coming back and Morrow will likely get a automatic spot. Its going to be interesting. I can see AA maybe trying to deal Buerhle but it is hard to say when MB was more or less our best pitcher last season.

 

I agree on all points, specially Hutch and Morrow (this also applies to the other thread). With MB I think AA will retain him given that as mentioned he was our best and is always a very reliable starter, but it wouldn't be shocking if he did take some offers, considering that he might be going hard after a certain FA/IFA or might look upon the possibility that one or both of Stroman/Hutch will start the season in the big club.
