  1. You could probably get a #3/4 starter and a reliever for Jansen and not have to lose all that control for Kirk and Moreno. I’m definitely not selling Moreno in anything less than a blockbuster. Teams don’t really make those kinds of trades using top prospects any more.
  2. Right now, which is kind of a useless thing to say because it’s so far away from the deadline, our needs are all relatively minor. We need another stripling type deal (or two) another couple of relievers and maybe a left handed bat. We probably could use a really good swing and miss reliever or two but I don’t think this front office will do that. That’s not a criticism but the way they approach the bullpen in the off-season and in trades last year tells me that they consider it an area where it’s counter productive to put tons of assets in. So, I don’t see any deal that would require a Kirk, Moreno or Jansen to get it done out there. Unless someone unexpected with multiple years of control is available at the deadline, I don’t see the point. The goal is just to make the playoffs and then spin the wheel. We seem on path to make the playoffs as it is.
  3. I think if it came down to it, I’d just keep Moreno down and put off a decision until the off-season. Injuries could change that calculus of course.
  4. I don’t think you can trade a catcher like Jansen or Kirk in season as a contender. I know the rays dealt adames last year but a short stop isn’t a catcher. It’s important but they don’t deal with all the pitchers. In saying that, if I HAD to trade one, I’d trade Jansen. Less control and also more injury history I think. Edit: also, Kirk might be a way bigger trade chip than people let on. He’s shown he can frame, he’s way more credible as a true regular catcher than was thought before, and he can straight up hit. Plus, 4 years more of control, one at the minimum. A s*** ton of teams would be interested in that. His body is a concern but will that really break down by 28? That’s when he’s out of control.
  5. Watching rays-rangers. 3-3 bottom of tenth, 2-0 count bases loaded and poche the rays reliever is barely able to find the zone. Rangers hitter swings at a borderline strike and flies out. It wasn’t even in the middle of the zone. It could easily have been called a ball. Couldn’t believe it. So f***ing dumb. Why couldn’t someone bail us out when chatwood was blowing games last year?
  6. I was thinking this. Also much higher on beltre than I guess fangraphs will be next update. Maybe, these things didn’t develop fast enough for the update. Also, I’ve never actually ever heard Jean Carlos Joseph’s name before. He must have some hype in the complex. Thanks Laika for the info!
  7. Anyone have the full list?
  8. Is tanner morris a guy now? Leftie, plays third and has a 162 wrc+ in double A. 24 so not that young for the level but not old.
  9. Vlads timing is off but I’m way more worried by the fact that he couldn’t recognize those two sliders and just take them. It doesn’t matter if they are borderline before strike 2. Terrible process. He needs to improve the process and the timing can come later.
  10. I think hit tool is just more useful than plate discipline when scouting high schoolers and international guys as well. You can see if someone can hit from looking at their swing and their ability to make contact. It’s harder to tell a good eye because there are so many factors. Like the pitching might be so bad that they are good enough to hit outside the zone as a conscious choice (you can’t walk your way off the island). You don’t know if they will show that they can narrow their focus against better pitching, but you can tell (more so) if some 14 year old in the Dominican can hit.
  11. I don’t think we will either but that’s basically what the rays did last year.
  12. So, he should swing at pitches 3/4 inches off the plate because if his timing was right he could hit them for doubles? I’m struggling to see your point.
  13. It didn’t though. It was 3/4 inches off.
  14. I think the rays would trade Jansen for a reliever or two they like and maybe a good prospect that doesn’t have to be on the 40 man soon. Kirk has more control. I’m not sure what we will do though.
  15. The second at bat wasnt a good at bat. He’s hitting against a great pitcher with a good put out pitch. You can’t swing off the plate inside 2-0. You have to take that pitch. You either go 2-1 or hit something weak most likely. These are high standards but one thing you always notice about trout is he rarely chases that kind of pitch.
  16. This is a good point. I will say though if that is his goal, then he needs to be way more selective. It’s hard to get optimal results with that strategy and swing off the plate or even on the plate at marginal pitches early in counts. It’s hard to hit pitches hard in the air that are off the plate or on the edges.
  17. An 80 grade hit tool is a .320 average. I think he could hit that 4/5 seasons.
  18. Fair enough. Soto is right up there though. Trout is more valuable defensively as well obviously.
  19. Of course Soto is better. How is this an argument? Soto is the best hitter in baseball.
  20. I think on vlad, I feel like it’s a combo of things, luck, timing, maybe an injury. I’m definitely not doom and gloom on it. However, I noticed that 2-0 pitch where he couldn’t take the ball off the plate as well, mostly because trout took almost an identical ball in a game a few days ago and I bored my wife by telling her that that’s why he’s so good. ‘Alot of guys swing at that because it looks hittable’. Vlad has a great eye. He needs to be way more selective.
  21. I meant more that they could have added a different reliever instead of Thornton and still have had a spot open and guys they could cut. Maybe they just think that Thornton is genuinely the best reliever they have to call up though.
  22. Robberse with a pretty good start. 7ks, 3BB, 1H, 3 ER over 4.2 innings. Fell apart right at the end but pretty good start.
  23. They are being very careful with 40 man spots I notice, even though there are a number of pretty expendable guys.
  24. If Zulueta’s stuff and command is there, they’ll keep pushing him. There’s no designated amount of time that he has to stay in the minors.
  25. You have to give Frasso at least a year to prove that he’s not a starter.
