Exactly, if we csnt attract free agents when there are very few buyers, what makes people think we can bid with other teams when things return to normal. This offseason should be our perfect storm so let's see how things unfold.
But there was an offer from the Mets that was better than ours apparently so we must have increased our initial offer if we really wanted Springer and it was indeed a "2 team race." The report said the Mets offer was 5/150 but I have a hard time believing Springer turned that down so who knows where the exact number is now.

Wonder if this will become a big deal...
Yup, we saw the benefits of slightly overpaying an elite talent like Ryu than scrubs like Roark/Grichuk. It's why I even questioned the money we spent on Ray right away if it meant we'd have 8 million less to use on a more impactful player later on.
I'm very curious as to what contract Bauer gets. There is such a gap between him and the next best pitcher on the market. You'd think that would lead into a slight overpayment for anyone looking for an ace.
The reported difference between the Mets and Jays (if true) means there was a massive gap between the two. It's not unlikely a team like the Yankees, Dodgers, Angels join a race for one of the big 4 thinking they could be had for cheaper than expected.
Lets see how things unfold because this is speculation at this stage. The results will speak for themselves.
If those numbers are true as to where the Jays and Mets are in terms of their offer, the jays are doing what a lot of fans feared, which is make a bunch of crappy offers with very little chance they'd get accepted.
Like how is it a "two team race" when there's a 35 million difference between the two. Most suspect the Jays to be underdogs anyways and then you say we're offering 35 million less?
If this is true, we're actually not in the market for any player and are bargain bin shopping. The difference between those contracts is MASSIVE to the point its not even a race.
We're like that guy in fantasy sports who throws out a bunch of crappy trade offers with no real likelihood of having a trade accepted.
To be fair, you get heavy odds for picking the Jays won't be able to get said player. Sugano just showed what happens when the Jays are the leading candidate to sign you They will refuse to get off their number. Now let's sign Springer to shut me up lol.
Just hope our front office proves him wrong. Theyve done a good job of building a solid young core but being able to surround tbem with the right pieces requires a different skillset. Lets hope they can step up to take advantage of the next 4 years or so of having cheap/controllable talent.
I'm sure most teams thought they'd be priced out from the start so they didn't bother to pursue Springer aggressively. But if they realize that's all it will take then I'm sure they'll try to swoop in.
I just want us to make it happen but let's see how things unfold. Don't let Stroman be right lol.
Agreed, he's not at an age where wasting another year will do him well.
No one wants to go 5/150 for him but 5/125 to 130 seems like the best he can do at this stage.
Springer seems like the best bet out of the 4 since it was supposed to be a "2 team race" for him. DJL and Realmuto can just re-sign with their current teams and Bauer can go to LAA. Players should get a little more nervous now that one of the bigger players in the market might be out for any big moves.
I think he'd rather opt for a 1 year deal and try his luck again next offseason if we're severely undervaluing him considering there should be more money available.
If we lose out on him now considering we should be the main option left, it would be depressing. Go get your man if you really believe in him.
Bryant, Springer, Odorizzi and a bullpen arm would be an awesome offseason. Still many great possibilities for us but it does really begin with at least 1 top tier free agent (Springer, Bauer, Realmuto, DJL).
Ya I was clearly upset at the Ibaka screw up because he actually wanted to be here. Agreed that Gasol was practically done but he still would have been a huge upgrade over the scrubs we're putting out there now. We could have easily offered a bigger 1 year deal or even a 2 year deal to Ibaka. We clearly undervalued his importance and are now paying for it because we wanted to keep a pipedream alive with no contingency.
