  1. Yes now that you mention it, Sogard and Stroman both have 2.0 fWAR (Giles has 1.5).
  2. both are roughly equally deserving, but with the Jays being at the bottom of the standings you had to figure only one of them would get the nod.
  3. Yeah max effort on the sinker is what could very easily lead that finger to flare up (assuming he uses the same grip as before). He may need to 'reinvent' himself, by as you said, abandoning the sinker and maybe replace with a cutter while depending mostly on the 4SFB and CB.
  4. Yeah I think so and that is affecting the movement on the 2-seamer - no longer the dynamic pitch it once was.
  5. Yeah even in 2016 as a starter, I think he would regularly hit 95-96 with the 2-seamer and it had lots of movement. Now he is more like 93-94, but it is just the movement is not there like it was so he can't get away with a lack of command like he used to.
  6. I wonder if he has been trying to back it off a bit to keep from messing up his finger and that has been contributing to the steady decline in effectiveness.
  7. Yeah I keep thinking the same thing. The big thing is the walks as usual. They only have 1 XBP against him in this game. But his velocity is consistently down from when he was effective. I am thinking the movement is not there on the 2-seamer like it used to be either.
  8. Stroman had 3.4 fWAR in 2016 add 3.2 fWAR in 2017, with about 200 ip in both. Had a down season in 2018 but is back again on pace to hit close to 200 ip with 3.5+ fWAR. So, if you go with the 1 WAR is worth about $8M, then a 5 yr contract at $16M per year would seem to be a decent value proposition with his track record and age. It is also important to consider that , as the other poster said, free agents are not knocking down the door to come to the Jays, so why not just pay your own guy (who actually wants to stay) what you would need to pay someone to come in from the outside for similar results.
  9. Please tell me you're just joking.......
  10. Totally agree but the question is how much is he worth. I said 5 yr /$80M in the thread that addressed this a while back. But as he continues to go out and perform well, his stock continues to rise. Whether that can be appropriately leveraged in a July trade deal remains to be seen.
  11. I guess the upcoming 4 game series with KC will be big for the 'race to the bottom'. I don't know how to feel about losing 3 straight by 2 or fewer runs to the mighty Yankees. I guess should take it as a sign this team might be able to be competitive in a couple years with some starting pitching.
  12. Give him a bit of credit. He made a nice pickoff which turned what would have been a 2 run HR to a solo shot. Also made a really nice barehanded fielding play on that one slow roller. He located his pitches decently for the most part.
  13. the problem is too many of the ones against him are not even borderline. that 2nd strike on his last AB was clearly inside
  14. seems all the umps are still trying to show everyone who's the boss and using Guerrero as their whipping boy.
  15. Richard against that all right handed hitting lineup is looking like a recipe for disaster
  16. Yeah, I agree MLB would not want to lose so may Yankees/Red Sox or Giants/Dodgers type matchups. But the current intra-division situation seems a little over-done. If they ended up with 32 teams split into 2 Conferences, each with two 8 team divisions; I would suggest: 12 games against each of the 7 divisional rivals = 84 games 6 games against each of the 8 teams in the the other division in the conference 8 x 6 = 48 games 4 games (2 away and 2 home) against each of the teams in one of the divisions in the other conference (alternate years) = 8 x 4 = 32 games total games 84 + 48 + 32 = 164 NOW what is the post-season format!?
  17. The thing is he doesn't need a long swing with the torque he can generate by rotation of his big fat body. If he cut down his swing he would have more time to recognize and lay off the bad pitches.
  18. Did I jinx the Red Sox with my post or can you only jinx your own team ? Glad to see them take this one after yesterday's tough loss. Would be quite an achievement to take 2 of 3 with tomorrow's game.
  19. It's about runs scored, and as already pointed out, a HR is always best for doing that.
  20. Yes and also he is a long time minor league manager, so he is used to working with young players wehich I think was part of the rationale. Anyway 5-0, game is pretty much over
  21. You are supposed to only use them for 1 inning, but Montoyo pushed him for 2 and you see the result. He should have been satisfied with 1 clean inning from Law because he is not good. Now this game could be over before it even barely started.
  22. Their triple A team draw well, so seems like a decent possibility. Other options (along with Charlotte, mentioned above) are Las Vegas and Portland (apparently they have a group there working hard to make it happen like in Montreal)
  23. He wasn't until getting called up a couple days ago when Smoak went to the DL. I think that was his 1st AB since being called up.
  24. The low attendance for a winning team in '94 reminds me of the current Rays. So if not Montreal, where would it make sense to relocate the team? Will Vancouver ever have a shot, or is it always going to be dogged by the proximity to Seattle (as with Hamilton when they wanted an NHL team)?
  25. So I think he will be a free agent after next season. Should they (assuming he is not dealt this July) try to sign him to an extension ? I know people say you don't need a closer for a non-contending team, BUT the hope is this team could be a playoff contender as early as 2021.
