Jays are presently 20th in the league in runs per game. Can we now, at last talk about an actual slumping Jays squad without simply dismissing it by stating that runs are down across the league. Yes, they may be, but the Jays are 20th in that low scoring league.
I really hope that Hernandez's return offers the much needed boost to this lineup. Right now, the Jays are producing at a rate that is below average across the league.
We may have to come to terms with the fact that the Jays are no longer that powerhouse offense they were last year. The loss of Semien's production's last year I think will be felt. I really do not care what Semien is doing this year, but it is true that this year's squad is going to find it difficult to replace the numbers he put up last year.
Vladdy, Bo and Hernandez had incredible offensive numbers last season, is it possible they do not replicate those numbers? Seems to me that everything has to go right for that to happen and the likelihood is rather slim.
Kirk, Chapman, Espinal may find their way and become more consistent at the plate, but if they do not all become more consistent hitters, the bottom of the lineup will have holes.
I actually think Gurriel will match his production from last year, he is a streaky batter and will find a way to produce much like he did last season.
No one on the bench really seems to be a factor. In short, the team will suffer anytime there is an injury. We have seen it with Hernandez gone and sadly may see it again during the long season.
I realize that having Springer in the lineup for an entire year is a HUGE advantage this season, but not sure that it can counter-balance all of the questions moving forward.
I know it is early, I know!, but my expectations for this offense has dropped. I have come to terms with the fact that it will not produce like it did last year. Yes, it will be a very good offense but it will not be as productive as last year's team.
On the positive side, I do think the defense has improved and hope that the pitching may also be improved. But the Jays will not be that team with the scariest lineup in baseball this year, they will have to win in different ways.
Possibly this entire rant is triggered by watching too many damn games where the Jays have scored one or two runs but I do think maybe just maybe we need to dampen our expectations in regards to this offense. At least I am going to do it. I thought the Jays would have the best lineup in the American League, I no longer think that is the case. I hope they prove me wrong, but A LOT of things will have to go right for that to happen and I just don't see it all falling into place for the Jays way right now.
