    I think it's pretty fair for both sides. Toffoli is a legitimate top 6 winger on a very reasonable contract who could play top line for Calgary if they didn't already have a great trio playing together. The first going back to Montreal is likely to be low to mid 20's so not a super high pick. From what I gather Heineman likely doesn't have a very high ceiling, and Pitlick was basically just thrown in to lower the cap hit a bit for the Flames.

    Just more MLB ownership dunking on minor league baseball. I am just so disgusted by the treatment of minor league players, such as how baseball argued against the players even obtaining minimum wages for their work. It's really beyond me how they can expect a professional athlete to reach their full potential when they can't even afford to feed themselves properly, or afford to even have a proper bed to sleep in so that they can't recuperate properly. It's just so short sighted to be pinching pennies in this fashion. With the rumblings of baseball eventually moving to more of a soccer style developmental camp training methodology perhaps conditions for minor league players will eventually begin to improve as a whole.

    I find it to positively ghoulish that MLB owners refuse to pay minor leaguer even their meagre regular season wages during spring training. It's shameful that it's expected that players are expected to live in poverty while attempting to train for the upcoming season.

    Kevin Smith produced a 144 WRC+ in AAA. That's certainly not bad for a guy who looked he was one bad season from washing out of baseball coming into the year. Fangraphs certainly doesn't think much of his hit tool scoring him as a 30. That's pretty harsh for a dude who almost doubled his AA walk rate while simultaneously slashing nearly 9% off of his k rate.

    Bauer had an awesome season in 2018 (5.8 FWAR in only 175 innings) before the obvious spin rate f***ery that happened towards the end of 2019. His spin rates had been creeping up over time since Statcast tracking started, but until the end of 2019 these appeared to be gains which could naturally be obtained through training as they were gradual in nature. From the end of the 2019 season until his eventual suspension it was alarmingly apparent that he was using some sort of sticky substance though.

    Instead of trading Moreno it would be easier to just move him to third base. He could also serve as an occasional catcher in that scenario as well.

    How on earth would the Jays ever need to trade Moreno in order to obtain a Steven Matz replacement? The team has already assembled a very strong starting 4 at this point, it's possible that any further starting rotation acquisitions would be back end/reclamation project types at this point.

    I don't think it would be prudent to bring a guy aboard who is no longer interested in playing professional baseball.

    Well there goes one possible third base option for the Jays for next season. Although I was lukewarm on him as a possibility as he might not have been much of an upgrade compared to the players already on the roster.

    I agree that 14 years is pretty crazy but the man is a generational talent and easily the best player the Jays have produced in their entire history. Let's not sell Vlad so short here, he's far from a bat only player. He's well on his way to becoming a plus defender at first base and he has improved on the bases quite a bit as well as his sprint speed has improved. It looks like he's busting his ass again in off season workouts so he is likely to continue to improve his defensive quickness and speed on the bases further.

    Lopez is garnering attention from a lot of different prospect evaluators right now, including being mentioned in a piece from the Athletic.     To me it looked like Ryu's command really got worse as the season progressed as he was missing in the middle of the plate far too often. He simply doesn't have the raw stuff to get away with poor command in the strike zone. It has been suggested by the team that he is going to need to have more rest baked in over the course of the season to keep him fresh. I think it might be high time he started to take his conditioning more seriously.

    I wonder if Semien and Seager were the front office's two preferred targets, and they set a limit on what they would sign Semien for as they intended to pivot towards a Seager signing instead of opening the wallet for Semien. It sucks that the f***ing Rangers scooped up both guys though. If Seager was a possibility it makes me wonder if Correa could be a potential target as well.

    Matz was pretty damn good in April and May with a FIP of 3.51, had two bad months in June and July with a FIP of 5.03, and then finished with two more very good months in August and September with a FIP of 3.69. This is far more than a few good starts as you are claiming. I won't shed any tears over his departure but if a deal could have been struck with Matz and the front office he would have been a nice piece to have at the back of the rotation. The rotation would have lined up as one of the best in MLB as it did towards the end of the 2021 season. Hopefully the front office can find another low cost high upside starter to try out of the fifth spot again, I just don't see Stripling having much success as a starter over an entire season and Pearson hasn't shown much at the major league level yet. Stripling hasn't had near the amount of success in the American League as Matz just had, and other than an 8 game stretch mid season (an actual handful of starts) he's been absolutely terrible as a Blue Jay.

    Last offseason was likely a once in a lifetime free agency environment as basically nobody was looking to spend money outside of a handful of teams. The prices from that offseason are in no way indicative of what you can expect to pay for these types of players now.

    My biggest beef with that proposed trade was saddling Kirk with Grichuk, as this ends up throwing away a good amount of value in order to save money. I don't think the Jays need to be giving away assets in trade in order to save cash, as they've shown the ability and willingness in the past to simply pay players to go away if necessary.

    Suzuki has won several gold gloves so he will likely be a quality MLB defender straight away. He is reported to have a plus arm but is likely limited to the corners as his speed is likely closer to average.

    Just because Tsutsugo struggled doesn't indicate Suzuki is going to struggle. Tsutsogo already had high k rates against Japanese pitching so it's not at all suprising that he has faced a steep adjustment so far. Despite the early struggles he managed to have a very nice showing in Pittsburgh producing a 134 WRC+ in a 43 game showing. Suzuki shows much better plate discipline and walks about as much as he strikes out, while not swinging and missing very often either. His swing is reportedly compact so he has a very good chance to adjust to major league velocity as well. I tend to agree that it's unlikely the Jays are serious about landing him given the needs elsewhere on the roster, but if this front office has shown anything they are willing to upgrade the roster where ever possible and then worry about where all of the pieces fit later. Suzuki has a shot at being an very good player for a relatively small financial outlay, so there's a little risk involved but I think he would be a great addition.

    It's been reported that Kirk intends to once again work with the Jays strength and conditioning department this offseason to improve his physique. He reportedly lost a good chunk of weight last offseason so hopefully he can do the same again this winter.

    Suzuki is unproven yes but it's not like Gurriel has set the world on fire up to this point in his career as he's been super inconsistent and there's no guarantee he ever finally puts a full season together. Suzuki likely has a higher floor given his quality right field defence and MVP caliber stats in Japan, and likely has a higher ceiling as well given the fact he's such a well rounded player. If Gurriel could be moved as part of package for a need such as a quality infielder then the team would be that much stronger as a result.

    At the very least you would think Grichuk or Gurriel would be moved out as the team would have no need for five right handed outfieldera.

    That's an interesting possibility. I don't know if the Jays would entertain that type of move given that Gurriel finally started to look more comfortable in the outfield towards the end of the 2021 season. If he can regularly run decent routes he has the tools to be a really good left fielder.
