    Between DRS, OAA and UZR I think that we have enough different metrics available to get a decently accurate judgment on player defence.

    I don't think he's in any position to demand that type of contract based on his body of work up to this point. I think he made a mistake turning down the $13 million option personally as he's been mediocre at best up to this point in MLB.

    There's also potential for them to get essentially nothing out of this deal as well. Paxton hasn't really shown the ability to perform after the back surgery that he had previously, so piling a Tommy John on top of that just ups the risk.

    I'd be cool with any of the above, but with the additions of: (in order of preference) Ketel Marte Josh Donaldson Matt Chapman Kyle Seager (at this point it would likely make more sense to wait for Moreno)

    Charlie is going to need to find a new DB (designated bunter) to send up at totally inappropriate moments of the game.

    I just don't see Freeman ultimately fitting in the budget. Reports have him looking for 6 years and $180 million. The Jays wouldn't hand out a similar contract to a more impactful player in Semien so I just don't see them giving that to Freeman.

    Vlad could split time at first with Espinal. You could roll with a combination of Espinal and Biggio at second, and Freeman and Vlad could split the remaining time at first and DH. It would be a little complicated but damn that infield would rake.

    If we knew that Vlad could play at least a passable third base I'd jump at Freeman in an instant. Freeman vs Bryant would be far preferable to me as I think each player will likely obtain a similar contract in free agency.

    Taylor is a great fit for the Jays. I'm just not excited about Bryant as I really don't think he's likely to be worth the contract he's going to receive.

    The bad boys teams were just so much fun to watch on the field. Donaldson with moments like the FYSMC from the dugout, Jose staring down the opposition on the field, Stroman with the shimmys and other assorted antics which pissed off the other team etc.

    We really didn't know about Osuna at the time though so I guess he can have a pass on that one. Oddly enough despite the inherent drama I find myself softening on the idea of a Stroman reunion as his addition would make for a real juggernaut rotation. And a Donaldson reunion would be awesome as well as I think in the Jays lineup he would likely be able to prodice a few more huge seasons with the bat.

    I dove into the defensive metrics a while back and Espinal actually graded above Arenado in the small sample that we've seen him so far. Arenados defensive numbers have been trending down over the years as appears to be last his peak defensively but obviously I can't definitely say Espinal is better given the very small sample of defensive metric numbers we have available for him.

    If you are just worried about third base defence then there really isn't that much reason to switch from Espinal to Chapman as Espinal is a plus plus defender at third base as well. Maybe not quite in Chapman's league but Chapman is basically in a league all his own.

    I think it makes more sense to spend the remaining money on a good infield player, more bullpen help and more of a reclamation starter type than concentrating so much into the rotation.

    I would actually prefer Marte over Ramirez, for a lot of the reasons you've mentioned, plus he's several years younger and should require less of a prospect outlay. He's really an amazing fit for this roster as he would improve the club in so many ways and has an amazing contract.

    I'm very curious to see what Ray ends up signing for. I have a feeling that the Gausman signing is going to look quite a bit more favorable by comparison. Add in the extra draft pick gained by Ray leaving and it's win-win.

    I see a pitcher with an elite combination of velocity and spin rate who has potential to be a massive contributor with the right tweaks. Even if he continues as a more or less average reliever that's a worthwhile gamble to take. It's really a low risk high reward signing similar to the Yates deal last offseason, except Garcia is less likely to miss the entire season than was the case with Yates.

    The Mets have supposedly offer Scherzer a 3 year $120 million contract. It would be amazing to see him turn that down in favor of returning to the Dodgers for less.

    It appears as though the Astros helped him to make some tweaks which directly led to improved results. I heard that he picked up a two seamer with the Astros which was a difference maker for him. He dropped his walk rate and increased his k rate a bunch during his time in Houston, so if those improvements carry forward he could be a real asset out of the pen. It's a bit of a gamble obviously but his salary isn't nearly large enough to really have any concerns in my view, and there with the premium stuff that he features there is potential for more.

    I looked into his numbers a bit recently and the thing that jumped out was that his fastball was extremely hittable. That doesn't explain how he's worse on the road though as you would expect that his breaking stuff would be more effective away from the thin air in Colorado.

    If he can replicate what he did with the Astros he will provide plenty of value, over a full season that would make him around a 1 win reliever.

    Jesus to me that makes the Matz deal look like a bargain in comparison. Rangers look desperate to spend money this offseason, I fully hope it blows up in their faces.
