  1. Missing from this entire conversation aside from the poster who originally brought it up is that Garcia has a vesting option for next season, so aside from a trade or an absolutely stupid decision like a mid-season DFA that would greatly weaken the overall pen, he's going to be coming back next season.
  2. I had no issues with pulling Gausman after 6 innings. He was coming off a minor injury after a pretty lengthy layoff and featured a really mediocre fastball on the day. He was fortunate to only allow 4 runs given how he allowed 4 gone runs. If ever there was a day to push him further this wasn't it.
  3. I see zero reason to fret so much over a $6 million option. If the team were to unceremoniously dump Garcia over a relative peanuts salary increase this would send a very poor message to potential free agents about whether the organisation is one to ultimately be trusted. Garcia provided the team with 0.9 WAR last season, and he will very likely end up with a similar contribution in 2023. A relatively paltry 2 million dollar salary increase which was negotiated in good faith by both sides is far from the disaster you are attempting to portray. You are acting like Garcia is going to see his salary triple instead of a modest 50% increase.
  4. Your way of thinking really puzzles me some times. (who am I kidding, basically all of the time). Garcia had a great stretch of games over nearly 2 months, and as soon as he gives up runs in back to back outings the crap about DFA'ing him comes back. Apparently two games where the batted balls fall in for hits is enough to cancel out two months of work where he was a key member of a shutdown pen. What's this middle reliever nonsense you keep stating? Garcia has been very good in high leverage situations, 2.64 FIP, 11.57 K/9, and only a tiny bit better in medium leverage situations, 2.60 FIP, 9.82 K/9. The young arms can be held as depth pieces in case of injury or underperformance. You seemed to have missed that the Blue Jays are already a luxury tax team. Pinching pennies on Garcia won't necessarily save them anything based on what relievers are being paid in free agency now, and there's no guarantee any of the young relievers working their way up through the system are going to be even as good as Garcia, let alone improving on what he has to offer.
  5. Go take a gander at the advanced defensive metrics. Vlad has Fangraphs second worse defensive value after adjustment among all MLB defenders, and only finds himself ahead of well known defensive butcher Kyle Schwarber. Despite the occasional blunder in the outfield Teoscar is having a really nice season defensively, ranking 4th in overall Fangraphs defense among qualified right field defenders.
  6. Teoscar grades out as a positive right field defender this season by every available metric. Compare that to Vlad who is having an awful defensive season at first base and the WAR difference isn't a huge surprise.
  7. Garcia went something like 4 weeks without allowing a single run. Over nearly the last two months he's arguably been the team's best reliever next to Mayza. I see zero reason to panic because he finally yielded a few runs on back to back days. His usage can be fluid based on how he's pitching, whereas if he's dominating the opposition there is no reason for the team to hamstring itself and limit his leverage, as this will invariably lead to the other leverage options being overused.
  8. Is this the Pierce Johnson in question? https://www.fangraphs.com/players/pierce-johnson/13435/stats?position=P If so this guy is having a pretty lousy season and is far from a guy I'd want thrust into a closing spot.
  9. Some people are obviously less worried about that than others. Like if some people are happiest enjoying what they eat and place more value in this vs the size of their waist then so be it. This obviously is far from ideal in a professional athlete but before this season each of Kirk and Manoah were top performers with similarly robust physiques compared to what they are featuring this season.
  10. You can find this information under the pitch modelling tab in fangraphs when viewing a team's overall pitching stats. This can be sorted by date in order to isolate an individual start. Manoah's second start back doesn't seem to be available in the Stuff+ rating on Fangraphs. Vs Tigers 4 seamer 85 Sinker 83 Slider 88 Changeup 49 Stuff+ 82 Location+ 112 Pitching+ 109 Vs Mariners 4 seamer 92 Sinker 72 Slider 99 Changeup 47 Stuff+ 86 Location+ 79 Pitching+ 75 Before Demotion 4 seamer 92 Sinker 95 Slider 96 Changeup 71 Stuff+ 91 Location+ 95 Pitching+ 93 After Return 4 seamer 88 Sinker 79 Slider 94 Changeup 48 Stuff+ 84 Location+ 95 Pitching+ 92 The stuff+ numbers are unfortunately worse across the board since he's returned from the minor leagues.
  11. This is a false equivalency. The Yankees rule is essentially an on field dress code and simply requires a player to shave and get short haircuts in season. A no fat player rule would directly police a players out of season eating habits which is something which would never fly with the players union.
  12. For a guy that is arguably MLB's best outfield defender, and in a split where he's going to receive the vast minority of his playing time given the relative scarcity of left handed pitching in MLB? Absolutely.
  13. What makes you think Danner is ready for a callup? He's currently sporting a 6.14 FIP in AAA while allowing 2.66 HR/9. I'll take Yimi and his impending $6 million vesting option any day of the week over that kind of output thank you very much.
  14. So let me see if I have this right. Only last year's numbers count against left handed pitchers and not his 2021 and 2023 seasons. But when it comes to total offensive output only 2023 counts, and not his contributions from 2021 and 2022. I'm sure you can see why I take issue with this line of reasoning. Varsho is so good in the field and on the bases that I'm perfectly fine if is more of a slap hitter against left handed pitching and a power threat against right handed pitching. All he has to do against LHP is basically hold his own and it's incredibly easy to justify playing him every day in center field.
  15. The thing to keep in mind is that if Varsho is able to return to being the player with the bat he was prior to becoming a Blue Jay he offers even more value than Kiermaier for a fraction of the cost, and without the inherent injury risks to potentially take him out of the lineup for large stretches of time.
  16. Garcia isn't nearly so bad that he's a DFA candidate. He has posted mid 3's FIP and xERA numbers and has had terrible BABIP luck this season.
  17. Varsho has hit lefties better than righties this season, and that was also the case in his half season in 2021 as well. He's still inexperienced enough at the major leauge level that's he is far from a finished product at the plate.
  18. Fair enough. I think that father time is going to eventually catch up to Kiermaier as he seems to have a bit of a chronic back issue that knocks him out of commission from time to time. If Varsho can regain his stroke at the plate he offers more overall upside than Kiermaier, but that's obviously far from a given.
  19. I'm less than thrilled that the club decided to immediately roster Cabrera instead of making even a cursory attempt to straighten him out in AAA first. I don't see how they are in the position to roll the dice on reclamation projects at the major league level given how tight the standings are.
  20. Varsho is having a bad season. In his other 1.5 seasons or so he was approximately league average offensively. It would be monumentally stupid for the organization to assume that Varsho can't hit for the entirety of his remaining control without at least letting him fail first. How in the world is Varsho a "princess"? The dude is one of the hardest working players on the field of play I think I've watched in recent memory.
  21. Wow impressive use of Trudeau and sweatpant references. Your online insult game is as weak as your poorly thought out baseball opinions.
  22. It's a bit of a surprise to see Nate sent down to AAA but he really needs to start commanding his secondary pitches if he's to have any success in MLB. I didn't realize how ugly his overall numbers are becoming since the early success after his callup.
  23. Spencer Horwitz is on a tear in AAA as he has hit 5 home runs in his last 6 games.
  24. I'd like to see Kikuchi be given a little more rope in games where he's dealing like he was last night. He was absolutely dominating the Mariners and it didn't seem like he had started faltering at any point in the game. Last night the team was receiving a top of the rotation level of performance from their number 5 starter, and it felt entirely premature to give him the hook after a runner got on base due to a soft serve infield single. Kikuchi has made dramatic gains compared to last season and I just can't shake the feeling the team is ultimately doing itself a bit of a disservice with the quick hooks on days where he's completely in command of the game.
  25. This feels like a bit of a chicken and egg scenario where Kikuchi isn't going to be able to prove he can go deeper into games if he's always yanked at the first possible opportunity. Kikuchi's numbers are actually pretty good third time through the order this season. I'd have no issue with giving him more rope on a night where his stuff and command both looked to be in peak form.
