His theory is that there isn't enough puck to go around for three skill guys on a line. He believes every unit needs a "puck retriever" ie hard worker to do all the little things in order to free up the skill guys to do their thing.
Hyman in particular is a guy Babcock has claimed to be one of the league's best forecheckers and retrievers, which is why he sees him as a fit to play with his skill guys.
The Rogers empire is the 4th most wealthy in Canada. Sure we could end up with someone who is more aggressive with less money, but I'd feel safer if our deep pocketed ownership just hangs on.

Nothing to dislike about today's moves. I wonder if they'll give any thought to maybe giving Diaz some OF reps in an attempt to maximize his value as a super utility type. Either way he's a lot more interesting than our previous utility infielders.
I don't think a deal would have lined up though. Ducks wouldn't have traded him for any of the Leafs rental forwards, and all the young guys are either too valuable or not as enticing as Henrique.
^ Yeah it looked intentional, such a greasy thing to do. They have to throw the book at him for it, can't let any action of this type enter a player's thought on the ice. We've seen enough of what skates can do with accidental contact.
His $9M for 2018 could be considered negative value in the deal, or perhaps just a zero value salary dump. Either way I agree there's no reason for anyone to covet Ziegler at this point in the off season.
