    A Rudy Gobert inspired France give the USA their first competitive loss in 59 games. He’s such a good player, and the Jazz have a team that quietly could be a contender this upcoming season.

    Our outfield sucks. As much as we need pitching, IMO with the current roster construction we won’t seriously compete until we have at least one very good outfielder. I can’t really see any of the current crop developing into stars.

    The difference is that while Pillar will only get worse, Grichuk has a good chance to bounce back to being a 2 WAR outfielder for the rest of his contract. Still think the contract was unnecessary though. 2 WAR outfielders aren’t so valuable that you have to secure them long term.

    He fell out with the medical team, and hated playing for a losing team. No chance he chooses to sign here, even if we offered the most money. He’ll sign for a contender.

    Yeah fwiw the wins prediction thread had an average record of 76 - 86 (including Spanky’s prediction of a .500 season). Most people thought we’d have a losing season, just not be a 100 loss team.

    This is partly why I don't think Atkins is guaranteed to be extended this offseason. We could easily be in the same situation this time next year, waiting for promising players to establish themselves, but .500 at best because we don't have any good vets or depth. In that case it'd feel like a wasted year of cheap Vlad and Bo (and Jansen).

    It would be highly ironic if they weren't extended, then did an AA style all in trade deadline when they realised they were likely gone haha. Seriously though, I'd expect Shapiro to be given the security, but not 100% sure Atkins will until nearer to next summer.

    One potential problem is that if you get an owner who is only looking to make money, you’re killing a franchise by taking away draft picks. It’d prob make more sense to say you can’t have revenue sharing more than 3 losing seasons in a row.

    Yup, watching elite teams is always better as a neutral. One issue with MLB is that if your team isn’t one of those, you’re not in a good position. Playing so many games means unless you’re super interested, you’re only going to closely follow your own team. If your team is one of the many that sucks, you’re going to lose interest - which for kids getting into the game can kill their interest before it’s even started.

    Sounds like the NHL cap simply isn’t high enough if everyone has to get rid of decent players all the time. But then how do those few elite teams do it - good drafting? A cap should be structured to allow teams to build, but low enough to prevent the biggest teams always signing all the best free agents. TBF the MLB soft cap with revenue sharing is pretty good at that. A cap floor would probably have a bigger effect (the ‘push’ to the extra playoff places’ ‘pull’ to increase competitiveness).

    Salary caps don’t prevent dynasties, most of the best players will still want to play for the Yankees etc, even if they’re not being paid more. We’d probably also see more stars taking lower than maximum contracts to help their teams. Re not being able to retain own players, have an NBA Bird rights style clause where you can break the cap for your own players.

    They would have to shorten the season. I know there are a lot of people that wouldn’t like it, but for me it’d be a good thing. 162 games is far too many.

    It’ll be interesting to see Zeuch “start” behind the opener today. He’s got as good a chance as any of being the 5th starter next season.

    Haha, luckily I'm not a Leeds fan! The Championship is the hardest league in the world, but I think they've got a great chance this year.

    That’s not a fair comparison though. An opener isn’t taking the start of an ace, he’s taking the start of a back of the rotation starter. Obviously Verlander is more fun to watch than say Clay Buchholtz.
