It was just a joke. The movie made him out to be very simplistic, not wanting his guys to steal bases, etc. The Royals are definitely getting on base, even w/o the walks.

Royals are a weird team. Don't strike-out, don't walk, don't hit that many HR. Second in baseball in runs scored (next to your Toronto Blue Jays)... they are hitting for average and stealing bases though. Billy Beane would be displeased.
