  1. I think Bautista has shown a lot of restrain on ball and strike calls this year. In the past I found it difficult to root for Bautista, I like the calmer Bautista much better.
  2. Bautista didn't want to be on base for Goins.
  3. Barney was a great pick up. I like his at bats.
  4. I like the Rogers Centre and can't think of a better location for the fans or city of Toronto. I think in another 30 years it will be considered to be a classic stadium.
  5. Chavez is serving his suspension, I believe.
  6. Maybe Ryan Goins has a learning disability that prevents him from learning to swing a bat properly. Or perhaps he is so over-confident that he won't listen to batting coaches. Probably it is the second alternative, so good bye Ryan Goins, you had your chance ... All you had to do was watch how Darwin Barney (and every other player on the team) hits a baseball.
  7. Dalton Pompey was on base 4 out of 5 plate appearances tonight (1 hit and 3 walks). He has a 0.276 average which seems good for AAA. Edited: His OBP is now at .356 (after Fri, May 20th game) - http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?sid=milb&player_id=592647#/career/R/hitting/2016/ALL Devon Travis was 0 for 5, but it is just one game. However, he was DH instead of at 2nd base, which I find rather surprising. Here is a link to the Box Score - http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=g_box&gid=2016_05_20_pawaaa_bufaaa_1&sid=milb
  8. The Blue Jays really need to win tomorrow, if they lose and then end up splitting this series then it will mean that this team just can get anything going. The Blue Jays need to turn things around now and get back to .500 and start making up ground on the division leaders. The first step should be to overtake the Tampa Bay Rays, as a positive step forward.
  9. Gibbons' job looks safe for a few more weeks. He made the right decision by pinch hitting Paredes for Goins, although I thought it was the obvious choice to make.
  10. Interesting that after the fight in Arlington, the Texas Rangers lost 3 straight to the Oakland A's, and Toronto lost 3 straight to Tampa. Texas won tonight and Toronto will have won 2 after tonight. Thankfully I can watch the games again, I had to stop for a couple of games.
  11. Fantastic picture by the way, did you take it? The Rogers Centre has to be in one of the best locations in all of the major leagues. What other baseball stadium is basically in the middle of the downtown core (are there any)? And the Rogers Centre is within walking distance of the subway and Union Station. A couple of years ago I was starting to think that the Rogers Centre couldn't measure up to the newer retro-stadiums. However, now with the dirt infield and newer turf it is a feast for the eyes, not in the way that Camden Yards is, but more as a futuristic, engineering marvel, as if one is on the star-ship Enterprise "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." (in spite of it being almost 30 years old)
  12. I almost forgot that they are playing at Target Field
  13. It is kind of a shocker. It is too bad that Goins can't have his own Designated Hitter like in some fun leagues.
  14. You nailed it. I took hundreds of words to try to say the same thing.
  15. I think you should provide stats. Your premise is that the Blue Jays are not taking any more "called strike 3's looking" than other teams. Basically, you are saying that pitchers are so good now, that hitters can no longer protect the plate. In my opinion, professional MLB hitters like Martin and Tulowitzki are expected to do much better than they have been and not look dumb at the plate by looking at strike 3, over, and over, and over again. Even casual fans can see that some players have a much better contact rate than others with 2 strikes. Donaldson was known for being good at hitting with 2 strikes last year. Maybe Zaun is right, some Blue Jay hitters are going up to the plate guessing too much instead of swinging at the pitches that they are getting.
  16. No, not at all. But what's the point, it is just baseball and if some posters on this forum don't understand the term "protecting the plate", then it just doesn't matter. I guess the umpires just need their own pitch-trackers like fans watching on TV. This is what I get for trying to have a legitimate discussion.
  17. Not sure if that was an insult, but either way you missed the point. A batter can't hit something unless they swing their bat. There are situations where taking a called strike just off the plate (say the first hitter, who is a weak hitter) is a good chance to take (the chance is that the umpire will call it correctly). As Dave Van Horne of the Expos would often say after a called strike 3 looking in an important situation, "that was too close to take".
  18. I think one of the biggest problems that this team has, is that hitters will let a (called) strike 3 go by if it is 2 inches out of the strike zone and often get called looking in important situations; Jimmy Paredes showed in the 11th inning last night how to protect the strike zone, he didn't take ball 4 until he was sure it was well outside the strike zone. I have also see Darwin Barney foul off pitch after pitch with 2 strikes and balls too close to take. To make things worse, Tulowitzki and Martin have even been taking strike 3's looking, in the middle of the strike zone. Maybe this is something that can be easily solved by the Blue Jay batters. For the fans, it is as frustrating as watching Donald Trump talk about foreign relations.
  19. Everyone assumes that the play is automatic. Obviously the runner didn't think so and that is why he tried to steal. What happens with poorly executing teams is that the pitcher throws home, or the pitcher makes a good throw to 2nd and the 2nd baseman isn't there in time or misses the throw, or the pitcher throws wildly into center filed. You must be a very casual fan to think routine looking plays always work out well, especially the way the Blue Jays are playing. I have seen runners steal 2nd on that type of play many times, and many balls thrown into center field.
  20. I have never seen a Cheeto run, they taste good though.
  21. You don't have to hope, the play was made. We all agree that Goins should be sent to AAA - what's the hostility for? The runner was put out and obviously it was a team play, Biagini didn't do it on his own.
  22. Although I agree with you, if you PVR'ed the game you will see that Goins covered 2nd and you can hear him call for the ball so he deserves some credit for being alert on the caught stealing. Biagini nodded his head to the catcher and was getting set to throw so we can't assume that play would have been made without the help and alertness of Goins.
  23. This is a serious question. I barely remember Paredes on the Orioles, but checking his stats on fangraphs - http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=5481&position=3B/DH/OF ; I see that he has 19 stolen bases in 251 games in the MLB over 5 years, and in 2012 with the Houston Astro's AAA team he had 37 stolen bases in 124 games. Question: does Paredes have a bit of speed on the bases?
  24. Interesting insight. I sometimes wonder about players and how they can play a 162 game season and have a private family life also. In Tulowitzki's case it must also be tough staying physically fit and coming back from injuries.
