  1. Same. Players joining national super teams to crush much weaker national teams is a waste of time for me. The highest level of baseball competition is MLB. Then again, Korea (and Japan?) has pulled out a victory, so I guess it's not entirely as silly as basketball in the Olympics.
  2. I think it was defensible at the time since when has a slugger's market ever cratered like this? Jays easily could have ended up with no one to play 1st. I think ensuring your squad has as many actual players on it as possible before entering a weak FA market is fine. Whether they let Smoak become a sunk cost that blocks better acquisitions is a different story though. Probably no way to prove it since not landing another 1B could be attributed to "no one wants to come here". I don't really know this Twisted feller at all or why he got pitchforked out of town but I'd absolutely vote for him as best newcomer if I took part in the board popularity votes.
  3. The Feldman thing doesn't need to be neutral; the whole day of August 1 needs a gold star. Maybe the best day of Shatkins' tenure? Feldman obviously didn't do a lot down the stretch but the rationale of using him to replace Chavez after flipping Chavez for Bolsinger (who was a replacement for Hutch, who himself got flipped for Liriano + two prospects) seemed reasonable to me.
  4. He was really good in that year time forgot.
  5. Is there more to this? Does "begin" mean that's what Pittsburgh asked before Shatkins hung up or is that where legitimate negotiations are starting?
  6. Maybe the mods should conduct their own execution.
  7. There are several combinations that can realistically produce ~6 wins. Bautista, Blevins, Valbuena could be one example.
  8. Smoak is a sunk cost. If he's a stumbling block for a genuine upgrade then I'm really disappointed. They're letting the Smoak problem just compound itself to hurt 2017. They extended him to avoid being frozen out of 1B bidding wars, but there are no bidding wars and upgrades are/were everywhere (Bautista, Carter, EE, Moss, Napoli)
  9. Then again if the Jays still had Hutch they might not even have made the Wild Card game, let alone won it.
  10. O's send Gallardo to the M's for Seth Smith.
  11. + Estrada might be gone after this year (not to mention his back problems). Liriano likely will be too. If they flip Stroman, the FO might potentially have to roll free agency dice for three major league arms next season. I think Sanchez + Stroman are underappreciated as a foundation.
  12. http://i.lvme.me/swtmvsx.jpg Discuss.
  13. Perhaps his first dinner of the new year?
  14. That's fine. That's what I'm hoping happens too, but people aren't "forgetting" Pearce's statistical comparison to EE in a 50% sample size. They're very reasonably skeptical about what you're calling the massive 'if'. Pearce has played one full season in the last three. It's a damn good season when compiled, but that's it. EE had four straight 150wRC years and then put up 135 last year (the drop probably due to the terrible start). If we're willing to see that statistical drop as evidence of decline I don't see any reason why anyone should be looking so generously at Pearce's spotty playing time and injury history.
  15. I'm reserving judgement on Pearce's two good half-seasons' worth of PAs and on the management's willingness to use him regularly. He and Morales combined might not even end up as productive in 2017 as Edwin on his own. I don't think it's unreasonable to be tentative over a guy who's never even had 500+ PAs in a year, coming off injury, and only three months younger than Edwin but without the track record of excellence. Pearce has a weird glow around him in these parts. He's a nice piece with the upside to become a very productive player, but that's it at this point. As for Pearce being an upgrade on Saunders -- probably a pretty significant one. Morales will likely be a substantial downgrade from EE. A healthy Bautista could likely make up the drop off from EE to Morales and probably even more.
  16. Just as many setbacks are possible for any team. Donaldson could twist an ankle, Tulo could re-injure something and miss a month, Estrada's spine could slip out of place, who knows. It's pretty unreasonable to not pick the Red Sox for the East barring an epidemic of sprinkler heads. I'd say the Red Sox have a more lenient tipping point than every other team in the East.
  17. I wasn't necessarily hopeful that EE would sign after the Morales deal, and I wasn't particularly sore about it... ...until EE only got guaranteed 3/65 from Cleveland. I'd love to have seen him grabbed for the reported original 4/80. At that price just sort out the roster logjam after. Rather have a logjam starring an EE that the FO clearly thought was worth the money and time vs. the potential lineup we could see on opening day. Yes, ST is not until mid-Feb, but more good things need to fall into place now than they would have with an EE return staring them right in the face.
  18. Moss could be cheaper than Saunders. I also think I read that Saunders may have failed a physical with the Orioles. I can't remember where though. Something could be genuinely wrong with him. He looked like absolute s*** from July on this past season.
  19. I can dig this. An alternative, just because I was babbling about him in another thread, could be Moss + Valbuena: vs RHP Devon Travis – 2B Josh Donaldson – 3B Kendrys Morales – DH Troy Tulowitzki – SS Brandon Moss – RF Steve Pearce – LF Luis Valbuena – 1B Russell Martin – C Kevin Pillar – CF vs LHP Devon Travis – 2B Josh Donaldson – 3B Steve Pearce – 1B Troy Tulowitzki – SS Kendrys Morales – DH Melvin Upton Jr. – LF Russell Martin – C Brandon Moss – RF Kevin Pillar – CF Shuffle up the lineup as you see fit, but that's probably what Gibby would throw together. Valbuena adds another LHH and can cover JD at 3B from time to time. Probably an easy 200+ HRs and decent fielding paired up with a solid rotation.
  20. He's a good fit but I worry that decline may have sunk its teeth too far into him. He's a fair bit worse than his good old days with Oakland from 2012-14.
  21. I did a bachelor week in Mexico in 2013. It was pretty cheap. I was ready to be done after like three days though since the group was mostly my buddy's other circle of friends.
  22. I've been invited to five destination weddings/wedding-related events since 2013. Why must people pry open my wallet to celebrate their 50-50 chance at banging only one person for the next 50 years?
  23. Lost in all this is that burlingtonbandit is apparently engaged to a man. #fiancee
  24. Valbuena would be great for a DH rotation. + Can play 1B v. RHP while Morales DHs + Can cover 3B and give Donaldson DH starts (Morales at 1B + never having to settle with having to give Barney ABs when 3B needs covering) + Will likely sit v. LHP and give Pearce time at 1B (with Upton getting ABs from the OF) Planning around opponent LHP starts could be an efficient way of getting Tulo and Martin DH reps. Valbuena would sit and SS and C would get covered by the backup at either position while Morales plays 1B. Pearce + Upton cover the corner OFs. Team gets the left-handedness + versatility Shatkins has been looking for. Smoak goes bye-bye for this to work too.
  25. I played this for the first time in a month or so. Running a Pittsburgh Pirates campaign. Currently 5-4 and just completed a 13-inning 9-8 victory in which I gave Jeff Locke an early 8-0 lead and watched it trickle away until Melancon finally coughed up the last two runs in the ninth. I did give Verlander an Upton-like pounding though (Kate). Also, I'm a moron and didn't think that I needed to warm my relievers manually. That's why my pen was so bad the first few games I manually played... Why didn't I think a game this detailed also included manual BP warming? Like I said, I'm a moron. The in-game BP warm up menu is right under your active pitcher menu, in case anyone else overlooked it too.
