  1. I'd do this. The FO may seem committed to Smoak but I think it's more than reasonable to think they may be trying to dump him somewhere. Carter seems the sort of player they'd love to add. One thing I genuinely wonder is how Pearce will be used. Does the FO see him getting everyday ABs?
  2. I just looked this up. http://www.trbimg.com/img-588005d2/turbine/sd-goodbye-chargers-logo-20170118 It doesn't even look like it's aligned properly. This is one of the worst things ever. It's like a kid's drawing of what an actual logo is.
  3. Imprecise wording. They should have just said he'd receive 500K. He gets paid out his 2017 salary like everyone else. It's no longer relevant when/if he receives the buyout. This whole article needs a red marker tbh.
  4. I think it's easy to see the Upton trade being similar to the Smoak extension: ensuring an affordable warm body will at least be occupying a field spot should big moves not get made. In this case, Upton at least being a good defender (paid essentially nothing by the org) allowed the team to look at other improvements coming into this offseason. Obviously no one could have really predicted the cratered market, but that's really moot. I think the rationale was fairly sound. Smoak ended up being more of a stumbling block, but I think Upton is still paying dividends because it still keeps the door open for improvements to be made through the season while he puts up okay numbers at no cost. If Upton is the hands-down worst regular on the team, I'm fine with that since he'll at worst probably just tread some water while the rest of the team's talent does its thing until the mid-season market starts up.
  5. I edited my post to add more detail, but you'll have to clue me in. I have zero knowledge about agents whatsoever except for knowing Scott Boras is a tough customer.
  6. He's an aging superstar who played negotiator through the media and then put in an injury-plagued season to the point where no one wanted him period. I'd say there was probably some considerable despair on his end. Though it might be more possible that Shatkins did all these gymnastics as optics to Jose. A convoluted deal like this seems to show considerably more interest than a one-year take-it-or-leave-it. Plus they'd know that he's probably embittered and gave him something potentially large to roll around in his head. Allowing someone to pick at a convoluted deal on his own terms is a good way of making someone think it was his own idea in the first place, which is great for managing larger egos. Who knows, though. I don't think Jose is that gullible either, and his agent would certainly be sharp enough to advise him about every possible angle. Maybe it's a bit of everything.
  7. Must include playoff games too. 150K really is comparably nothing compared to the rest of it, but if the team just pulls in people all year and gets some postseason home games in he'll get one more 150K lump. 3.5 million tickets sold is a stretch to begin with, though. Very possible he doesn't get any of these bonuses. If the team has one of its familiar slow starts, no chance for 3.5M.
  8. With the new 10-day DL, that means Jose's leeway is roughly two minimum-time trips to the DL + praying Gibby doesn't give him a day off here and there. Could easily become another Frank Thomas situation. This all depends on '18 getting mutually approved though, which is unlikely. Jose is very likely better off finding guaranteed money after this year... but I guess the option is still there. Plus it'll very likely put the onus on Jose for leaving Toronto. If he has a good year and bails, it's on him. If he has a bad year and the team cuts ties, very few will be upset. Jose will also get a second chance to bet on himself, which is funny/sad.
  9. Thole sucked and I whined about him with the rest of us but his impact was really kind of negligible. And in fairness to him he really had quite a difficult job in catching a trick pitch once every five days while getting no other reps whatsoever. I'm all for picking up a decent vet to back up Martin but I'm not really sure if it's a spot worth spending any of the remaining cheese on when AJ is right there.
  10. If that 1.5M helps sign one more above average regular, I'm more than okay with Jimenez as the backup. I did like Iannetta too, though.
  11. I'd keep him at his good spot, ideally. I'm not convinced it's a good option. For me: vs R (ideally): 1B: Valbuena LF: Pearce vs L: 1B: Pearce LF: Upton Donaldson DH: 1B: Morales (or Pearce) 3B: Valbuena LF: Pearce (or Zeke/Upton)
  12. I wish they could just bring in Valbuena and lose Smoak in the couch somewhere. Replace him with a cutout of Edwin on the bench. Barney should really only be getting ABs at a middle infield spot when he starts. A DH day for Donaldson's maintenance wouldn't be a huge downgrade offensively, if at all (assuming Morales is able to at least make routine plays at 1B).
  13. A Wild Card contender really has no excuse to f*** around with roster details and options for mediocre players. The Blue Jays can't really afford to see if Zeke can replicate what really amounted to mediocre stability. If there's a better option, take it immediately, whether that involves giving Pompey a legit shot or signing someone else. I'd also be happy with punting Smoak. I'm a Pearce OF skeptic as well, FWIW.
  14. He'll have to really steal the job. Does the team not lose Carrera if they try to option him (unless he accepts the assignment)?
  15. Do you not sign an NDA or something when you work for a huge media company?
  16. With respect, because I don't have your correspondence in front of me, this reads more like setting up for the possibility than it being done. If it were actually done the guys whose jobs it is to be on top of news (Ken, JP, Heydude) would presumably be tweeting a storm. Again, I don't know what the process is at your workplace when streams are set up, but as an outsider it doesn't really seem convincing.
  17. I've become a pretty big Pagan supporter. I appreciate all his skills and think he'd do fine in LF here. My only big hang-up with him is age. I'm pretty wary of signing guys whose needles could easily be touching E. On the other hand, Pagan is a low cost move and I still think it's a better bet to go with Pagan wringing one more decent year out of his skills than Carrera repeating what he did in 2016 (which wasn't even impressive by overall measurements, but simply that he played the best version of himself).
  18. My ears are burning.
  19. We're saving the Dunkaroos for someone we really want to go away for a while, sorry.
  20. Well there's really nothing that can be done about what the other teams do next year. The Yanks and Sox will be what they will be regardless of what the Jays do. Might as well sensibly beef up the 2017 squad without selling out and make another kick at the playoff can before things get really tough. Bautista makes this a good team, and another sensible addition could make it an on-paper Wild Card favourite.
  21. I wonder if someone else suggested the possibility of a buyout/deferral angle two pages ago.
  22. Maybe there's a buyout on it. Good way to extend Jose's take home pay without having to cough it up in 2017 while giving him the opportunity to re-test free agency in 2018.
