The fact that we're attracting free agents at all is kind of cool.

He definitely should cash in now when he can. If he signs the QO he's trying to rebuild value as an aging player and there's so much risk involved in that for him, I think it's more likely to backfire than pan out.

Is it simply speculation what payroll is increasing to? I keep seeing 160.

Smoak hasn't started more than 80 games in a season in 4 years... he was never extended to be a starting replacement. It was just a terrible decision and they have to live with it. At this point Smoak's role is an overpaid bench player with some backup 1B skills. There will be someone else, there has to be.

Do you honestly think they view Smoak as a starting player on this contending team? Regardless of what you perceive $4MM to be, they are not stupid and they are aware it's likely burned cash at this point.

Does he need to strike out at a 40% to be considered a failed year? Realistically I think they saw Smoak's 139 wRC+ of May and prematurely extended him. His agent probably deserves credit for it.

I don't understand how a non-qualified player can win any award that isn't ROY. I'm not saying he's not deserving, just seems like a flaw in the system when MLB doesn't recognize them in their official stats. -
He's not exactly a CFer either... He's going to get a 4 year deal at minimum.

Some of it is unlucky sure but I think he f***ed himself from the throw to first trying to get Delmon Young last year. I don't think he's been the same player since, he made a few solid throws to end last season but probably not without having multiple cortisone shots.
