  1. Damn, sad to see him go but it's good for him to cash in.
  2. US Federal Tax for anyone making > $415K/yr is 39.6% (hence the 40%). Florida doesn't get to avoid paying the government 5%, if they hide the money, move the money, write off expenses, etc. the same can be done anywhere with a quality accountant. The thing is your permanent home residency matters that is being overlooked. Kershaw's home residence is Texas to avoid LA taxes: http://www.accountingweb.com/tax/irs/clayton-kershaw-saves-millions-in-taxes-thanks-to-texas Here is McCutchen's paystub, just look at all the state taxes he has to pay out based on where each game is played, he doesn't just pay 3% Pennsylvania State tax. http://i.imgur.com/TyrGObW.jpg
  3. I get what you were saying, it's just your numbers were off. If we considered everything being even (which it's not): $100MM x 0.40 = $40MM in taxes $100MM x 0.46 = $46MM in taxes (15% increase) $6MM doesn't equal $25MM:
  4. Well that's because you're not rich
  5. /sarcasm
  6. No worries, nobody saw it.
  7. Cabrera's contract is scary as hell.
  8. Not how it works. I believe you pay your state tax based on residency where you live 6 months of the year. No surprise spring training is in FL and AZ. The season is literally 1 day shy of the threshold and even so your home games don't total 6 months. I think you also pay some tax per game so you pay to each state through the year but it's a far cry from 30% of guaranteed contract. It's a big misconception and why many players have their primary home of residence in AZ or FL. Edit:. Also I don't know where you came with 25-30%? US federal tax is 40%, Canada's is 33%+13% for Ontario. It's a 6% difference between ours and a tax free state.
  9. Just the same Edwin could say ya know I don't really need any more than $80 million dollars but that's not how this works. Just because a player (more likely agent) wants max dollars doesn't mean a team that can afford it should pay it. Jays gave their best offer they were willing to go to which is very fair for a DH bat, it's a take it or leave type of deal and you can't knock them for it.
  10. The word deserves should never be part of salary negotiations when talking MLB players.
  11. Uhh... pretty sure this is like from 10 years ago
  12. You grabbed the wrong link but I might have to take some tums before considering Peavy as a target because of his spin rate.
  13. Usually problems urinating, and that's kind of a wrong way to put it but yes a rectal exam they check for anything abnormal. Then a blood test as well. I'm 33 and have had it done. Usually start doing it at 40 I think as a normal health check up.
  14. Anything is plausible but there is a massive risk difference between a 10 year contract that doesn't end until a player is 42 and a 4 or 5 yr contract that ends at 37/38... but yea any contract > $20M over 5 years+ obviously comes with a big risk when players are already in their 30s. I also don't think it's fair to bring up the worst value to contract in the bigs as a comparison. Beltre signed a 5 year deal at age 32 and provided 5+ WAR throughout the contract.
  15. Blue Jays showing interest in free agent right fielder Hank Aaron.
  16. Probably debatable but not worth the effort to look.
  17. I don't know, I kind of associate cancer as awful news no matter how early.
  18. I think he's been moved to 1B in Korea but could be wrong. He's listed as an infielder on their team pages.
  19. Ugh that's some awful news to hear, hope he battles through it. Stay strong Jerry!
  20. I think Beltran is better suited as a DH at this point in his career. He only started in 67/151 games on the field last season and hasn't been a plus defender in years.
  21. Uhmm you want to replace Saunders & Bautista with Carerra and Pompey in hopes of finding a Votto like first baseman. And you said Smoak is going hit 30HR or something?
  22. I think EE's camp likely feels 4/80 is the minimum bid they are even considering right now so the Jays putting a time frame on that is not going to rush him to sign. He's probably going to get that same offer as a starting point from someone regardless so he might as well shoot for the moon and try netting an extra $10MM+ while his name is hot. Sort of sucks but I'm quite happy to see Atkins putting his best offer out to try and land him, similar to Cardinals trying to land Pujols.
  23. A $ usually means money. $80+ guaranteed, years be damned.
