Thanks. While that may be true that parents jump on getting their kids meds, keep in mind medication is often the only option both based on the severity of the case and a family's financial situation. Unfortunately, therapy is simply not cheap and for any minor ADHD diagnosis, it's often not covered by insurance or eligible for Government support. You apply for financial help but the CRA makes that decision based on your supported papers. So if you don't get financial help for therapy and a pill can help your son with his daily life, it could very much benefit him.
Consider summer camps even. If you sign your son up for a week summer camp, for the average kid there are tons of choices, just go to your community centre or look in a paper. There are programs that are free or at least good affordable options to keep them focused while out of school. Many kids with ADHD (or in our case Autism) may not be good fits for most of them. The 5 day special needs camps we put my son in costs $400-$500/week. Last month's program he cried and flipped out each day, he could hardly fall asleep at night because he was so afraid they might pressure him to try a cookie (yes a cookie). Anxiety can limit one's life if it's not treated one way or another, I certainly wouldn't judge someone or their parents because they are on medication for ADHD, that might be their only way to cope with life.
