He is not a coach though, he is a manager. What did you think of Joe Torre before he went to the Yankees? Managers jobs are probably less valuable than the team's strength and conditioning coach.

First of all I think you have to stop using the term "coach". Managers aren't there to coach, they are there to make in game decisions. There are hitting, pitching and fielding coaches who are there for that and even then players older than 25 are not going to improve because of coaching. People need to stop thinking a manager is going to coach his team to be better than their talent. Take any manager in the MLB and have them on this Jays team this past season and they will win between 81-85 wins.

Weren't those guys drafted when AA was AGM too, minus Snider? I think AA could have done a better job in some areas but he is not as bad as people make him to be. As for him not saying s*** when asked questions, thats his job. Id rather he be good with the media and not say stupid s*** like JPR which impacts guys value. Sure it might be better as a fan to have a better idea of what the team is doing but nothing good comes of him talking more openly about plans and players. As a Sens fan, Bryan Murray is too honest with the media and I think it hurts players value around the league. Look at what the return Jason Spezza got and tell me that other GMs knowing he was going to move him had nothing to do with the s*** return he got.

Thats pretty much what I was going to say. Challenges usually come from upstairs anyway and the Manager is just the middle man.

Well a dollar in 2006 isn't the same as a dollar in 2014 so i think you would have to look at it relative to the spending of other teams. You could also say one of the reasons AA hasn't been successful is because there were no MLB prospects in the system when he got here because of Riccardi's drafting and developing and that is going to have a huge effect on $ per win since young guys obviously make league min. Wins and losses might not be as telling of a stat in relation to how good a GM has been as you think it might be. Every situation is different.

Don't you have to use an option on a guy regardless if he is on the 25 man or not depending on how long he has been on the 40 man roster? -
Its wrong for suggesting hes Amateur because of win/loss record at challenges. If you watch the games you will know there are different circumstances regarding challenges and that the manager is not the one who is advocating challenging all the time.

This. Or Reyes complaining saying he was for sure safe only to be out by a mile. You can't look at wins/losses in challenges to determine how good a manager is because the result has less to do with the manager and more to do with bias from umpires more than anything. -

I agree. I'm just saying people make him out to be much worse than he is. He has made some great trades and signed some great contracts, also has made some terrible ones. I think he values relievers too much and position players not enough. I think this offseason and next year is going to be really telling if he is a good GM or not and am excited to see what happens. IMO he deserves one more year to prove what he can do.

Yes and you have to look at all of the work he has done. Also you make it sound like its clear cut all the time. Like I said, all deals will have risk associated with it and even the best deals will not work out sometimes. Any GM won't be 100% making deals. I think if you look at the total value of the Bautista, EE, Morrow and Romero deals the Blue Jays still came out on top. You can't just cherry pick two deals that didn't work out and say he is doing a bad job when it comes to contracts.

Is he out of options next season? I hope he gets a look. If Navarro is going to stay as the starter they really need to get Sal to work with him to correct his technique of receiving. I think the biggest issue is his target being too high and his elbow being extended too far forward when he catches. If he can correct these 2 issues he should be able to at least be average receiving wise.

Who thought the Romero and Morrow deals were terrible deals at the time they were signed? I thought they were great contracts but unfortunately didn't work out. Sometimes risks work sometimes they don't but the reward would of been huge had they performed at their career expectations.

With the analytics team they hired I doubt they would make that decision. Could maybe see one of them being a guy on the inactive list who they carry and play the odd game here and there but thats it.

Exactly..I wanted Jiminez and McCann and they had pretty bad years and I'm glad we didn't sign them in hindsight. Also was excited about Izturis and I thought that was a steal for what he was going to produce and it turns out he has been a massive disaster so far. If you could always predict everyone performance there would be no enjoyment int actually watching teams play. Part of the fun of baseball is how unpredictable it is.

Stephen Brunt is on Tim&Sid right now as well and is talking about Beeston. Really interesting to hear him say (when talking if Beeston will be back) how Beeston is a guy that might not be a fit with the new technology driven Rogers since he is a guy that for better words is stuck in the past. Now I think we all knew this but to hear someone in the media finally say this is pretty interesting and could be telling. Not sure why it would take this long. Beeston knows nothing about Technology and Rogers is trying to be innovative with watching games on phones and tablets etc...

Could also be him boosting his trade value. AA also says he won't say his opinion of a player because it can alter their trade value and that they monitor players trade value in the media.

Yeah I really wanted that one too. I think they were in on him at the time but because they didn't want to be stuck with nothing went ahead with the Marlins deal and obviously in hindsight it looked awful. I think people underestimate the amount of luck in predicting performance. Theres been guys who I've been high on who for whatever reason s*** the bed the next season or don't live up to expectations. There's a huge amount of luck involved in any free agent signing.

Out of all the big FA contracts handed out last year are there any that are going to be good value? I honestly don't blame him for signing some of these monster contracts, its the over valuing relievers that I am scared of. I actually think AA isn't a bad GM considering how good he has been with the farm system and signing great contracts with players already on the team. He is probably top 5 in MLB in that area, its the roster management that I think he struggles with.

No and with the money James Shields is going to cost I don't want to sign him. Part of the value of James Shields is that he is durable and with Dickey and Buehrle being just as durable you don't really need a James Shields for how this roster is constructed. The team's strength is the rotation and the team would be much better off spending money on 2B and LF.
