  1. Don't forget the 3-way trade for Mark Trumbo.
  2. http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/02/02/sunball/qbZR3rJEoLrIHTAQj1t7cO/story.html Nick Cafardo says Burnett has many suitors.. and yet says the Yankees might try to bring him back (unlikely, as they pretty much booed him out of New York).
  3. That and teams that do need PGs(Lakers, Knicks) are in salary cap hell and can't afford to add talent without the NBA blocking a deal due to salary cap rules. I bet Lowry ends up resigning, especially if the Raptors get to the playoffs and have a deep run, which is a good possibility with the weak East.. heck, even Miami is beatable due to their weaker depth after Lebron/Wade/Bosh due to salary cap issues, poor choices (see Michael Beasley), and age/injury. At this point, only Indiana really looks like a threat in the East. The West is a lot deeper..
  4. Arroyo's right. Kershaw deserves the money because of his Cy Young awards and elite status. Tanaka's not proven in MLB.. giving him $20M+ a year is risky because he hasn't thrown a single pitch in MLB. I'd give that money to Yu Darvish.. but not to a guy who is not as good as Darvish, and got overpaid because of the Yankees' desperation to win another World Series before Jeter retires instead of actually committing to a rebuild like in the late 80s/early 90s.
  5. Must we look at Burnett's 2009-2011 numbers in New York? He's best suited to the NL and in a pitcher's park.. putting him in somewhere like Baltimore would be a terrible.. he should stay in Pittsburgh or a market with a decent pitcher's park.
  6. Then he shouldn't have signed with the Yankees. I can imagine the Blue Jays ownership doesn't want to go through AJ Burnett again. And let's not forget the maddening inconsistency when he was in Toronto, with the injury in 2006 which got Casey Janssen called up to start, frequent wildness, etc. Yankees fans likely have the same feelings with Burnett as well.. outside of 2009, he was frequently awful in NY.
  7. We already tried Burnett here once. And he burned bridges with us by signing with the Yankees. He should really stick to being in the NL, as his AL numbers in Toronto and New York were not impressive, as his poor results were the reasons the Yankees dumped him onto Pittsburgh. Stick to Santana or Jimenez.
  8. No Burnett again. He burned bridges with us by signing with the Yankees in 2009 after opting out. And he's best choosing an NL team, as his TOR and NYY numbers weren't much to write home about in the AL. (Don't be fooled by his 18-10 record in 2008, as he was mostly mediocre in both Toronto and worse with the Yankees, and Baltimore should avoid the same mistake Boston sort of made with Ryan Dempster, whose numbers were poor after he left Chicago (NL) in both Texas and Boston. Dempster isn't even guaranteed a roster spot in Boston in 2014, especially with a rotation of Lester, Buchholz, Peavy, Lackey, Doubront, and all those strong young arms in AAA. Don't be surprised if Boston trades him or Peavy by Opening Day, as Dempster probably doesn't want to go back to working out of the bullpen again at this point in his career.
  9. No Yuni Betancourt in Toronto, thank goodness. Ken RosenthalVerified account ‏@Ken_Rosenthal Source: Free-agent IF Yuniesky Betancourt has reached agreement with Japan’s Orix Buffaloes.
  10. Boston wants that draft pick and wants Bogaerts playing every day. Don't bet on Boston resigning him. Yankees have already said they're not spending anymore money on luxuries after Tanaka this offseason, and the Mets are cheaping out.
  11. According to Ben Nicholson Smith, http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/report-blue-jays-in-the-mix-on-infielder-drew/ Jays are one of four teams in the mix for Stephen Drew, to play 2B.
  12. A number of teams, even the Red Sox, have stories about Boras as well.. it's not just a Blue Jays issue. Boras has sold certain free agents to teams for way too much money, which have hurt franchises because he hypes them so much..
  13. Why does everyone hate Moises Sierra so much? Just because he's a lousy OF, doesn't mean he could be a decent DH and platoon partner for Lind. Don't you remember he hit very similar numbers to Jeff Baker last year with decent doubles power.. and he doesn't have hernia issues, which forced Baker on the DL for a chunk of last season, and hurt his numbers in the 2nd half (.236/.325/.375) That hernia issue with Baker is why many teams are not willing to sign him.
  14. He won't be unsigned for long. MLBTradeRumors reports that he is close to signing with a team, and the Nats and Marlins are in the mix. Considering he only hits lefties and isn't exactly a guy you can play defensively, he's better suited as a NL player. Remember, he was with the Cubs for many years.
  15. It's good in pitching prospects, but a lack of position player talent will force them to trade pitching for young hitters, similar to what they did when they traded Shields for Myers.
  16. We aren't. Angels already got their SPs for their rotation in Skaggs and Santiago. And the Angels will likely sign a SP before the offseason is up, likely someone like Arroyo or Hammel or Malholm.
  17. http://bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/boston_red_sox/2014/01/mlb_notes_yankees_still_understaffed Jays rotation is 4th in the AL East, but we're not done yet, and they forgot about Nolin and Stroman. Yankees, even with Tanaka, lacks the depth to compete against Boston and Tampa Bay.
  18. Yes, the batting order won't be good. The pitching staff is being badly overrated, though, since there are unknowns on Tanaka, CC Sabathia is already in his decline phase and is difficult to trust as a #2 starter. Kuroda is a tough call due to his awful 2nd half, Nova is an enigma, and who knows what they'll get out of Nuno, Pineda and Phelps (although Phelps may end up in the pen with so much uncertainty in the rotation and bullpen forcing the Yankees to carry both Phelps and Warren as long-men.)
  19. From a recent article in Baseball America, here's their take on Tanaka: http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/whos-better-masahiro-tanaka-or-yu-darvish/ It does warn about his fastball being potentially flat and his slider being a risk for being left up in the zone, where it could get hit for HRs, especially at Yankee Stadium, compared to Yu Darvish, who has better movement on his fastball.
  20. Exactly. Tanaka might be able to get away with his stuff against AAAA sluggers in the Japanese league, but he won't have the same luck in the MLB. And we all remember how much of a bust Matsuzaka was.. even his rookie season was terrible, despite his strong seasons in 2007 and 2008, his FIPs were frequently very poor, showing that he was actually a terrible pitcher in the MLB. BTW, FIP ratings: Excellent 2.90 Great 3.25 Above Average 3.75 Average 4.00 Below Average 4.20 Poor 4.50 Awful 5.00 Dice-K always ranked towards the bottom end of this range during his entire time in Boston. Also, Tanaka's best season by FIP was in 2012. Perhaps he's already peaked?
  21. You forgot to mention that his BB/9IP rose last year as well. Also, some pitches that are strikes in Japan won't be called those in the MLB. And a pitcher like this with a heavy workload.. wasn't there a certain pitcher named Dwight Gooden, who began to break down at age 25 due to overuse in his young career.
  22. What they don't consider is that Tanaka's K rate has declined since the 2011 season, which is concerning. Oliver is way off.. did they even see his numbers for Rakuten the last few years? If his fastball is as flat as some scouting reports have said, he is going to get lit up in the AL East. He can get away with most of his stuff in Rakuten, but do that in MLB and he'll get destroyed. Yu Darvish has gotten better in recent years, and has better stuff than Tanaka, at a lower price than what Tanaka got.
  23. NY media giving comparisons and warnings about Tanaka potentially being a repeat of the Catfish Hunter situation if they overuse him: http://www.nj.com/times-sports/index.ssf/2014/01/federovitch_yankees_must_prote.html Note Catfish Hunter was overused as heavily as Tanaka was in Japan, and this was before heavy bullpen specialization and usage. Pitchers are also weaker in stamina compared to when Catfish Hunter was pitching.
  24. Still, it's incredibly risky. That deal could get really bad by the latter part of the contract, especially considering the mileage on Tanaka's arm already at 1315.0 IP. It's no wonder why most teams were willing only to go 5-6 years. Not to mention that he's mostly pitched against the equivalent of AAA/AAAA competition in Japan.
  25. It's a non-issue. Give it a rest already. This is more an issue in the NHL, not in MLB or the NBA.
