  1. A 36% K rate, poor offensive numbers and lousy defense at both 1B and 3B pretty much guaranteed Brett Wallace would be DFAd. Especially with Chris Carter still there and Johnathon Singleton a mere 1-3 months away from the majors. AA looks smart trading him now, even though Gose has struggled, Gose is still only 23 and can still improve. I remember when we wanted Wallace up in the majors. Now we understand why AA didn't want him around..
  2. Uhhh.. Ervin Santana, Ubaldo Jimenez, and others are still out there. Jays are still expected to sign someone. Rolen was traded because he wanted out of Toronto, Rios was let go because he struggled badly, and a club such as the White Sox took a flier on him. Remember, JP Riccardi gave him that awful deal.. Also, that was the same year JP Riccardi got fired as well.
  3. Some sad news to report, Curt Schilling has been diagnosed with cancer: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10403896/curt-schilling-diagnosed-cancer&ex_cid=sportscenter
  4. Dodgers sign Justin Turner to help boost the depth of their infield, which is not strong due to the uncertainty of Alexander Guerrero and injury risks to Uribe and Ramirez. Former Cub and Mariner Bryan LaHair signs a minors deal with the Indians.
  5. And expect many teams to follow Atlanta's example with young players, as teams try to lock up young players in their prime, and prevent them from going to big market teams like the Yankees, forcing those teams to actually have to develop talent. Atlanta's had a strong system for a while.. but while Freeman gets 8 years, Heyward will likely hit free agency in 2016, and Kimbrel will likely be traded this season or next, as his salary will get too excessive for the Braves, a small/mid market club, to pay. Until the Braves get a better TV deal, their new stadium and better attendance, they'll have to develop their team like the Rays. Rays did a similar thing with Longoria, like the Braves did with Freeman, BTW.
  6. Where were they when the dollar fell to under 80 cents in 2009?? This is not news. And besides, the US dollar is going to fall sooner or later, as this recent rally is more due to the Fed unwinding QE(quantitative easing) and does not reflect the poor fundamentals of the US. Why Sportsnet would report a story like this is questionable. The moment good economic data comes out of Canada, our dollar will rebound. Besides, at least we don't have a ticking time bomb of Obamacare to worry about..
  7. Does anyone want Stephen Drew? http://nypost.com/2014/02/04/mets-exec-drew-is-a-long-shot-to-sign-with-amazins/ Red Sox don't want him (Bogaerts), Mets don't want him (money), Yankees don't want him (over-budget after Tanaka).. who's gonna take him?
  8. Actually, Arencibia is below average at 57. Goins is at 62. Rasmus, Lind, EE, Bautista and Reyes all ranked above average.
  9. I should also point out any wRC+ of 120 or better is considered excellent, 100 being great, and 60 being average. One other consideration is that the + in the wRC+ also is park and league adjusted. Guys like Chris Davis, Joey Votto, David Ortiz and Paul Goldschmidt likely see their wRC+ inflated/deflated by the ballparks they play in, and playing in the AL or NL.
  10. Wanted: Another pitcher for the Padres. Cory Luebke will miss the 2014 season with a 2nd Tommy John surgery. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/sd/padres-left-hander-cory-luebke-to-miss-second-straight-season-with-elbow-injury?ymd=20140204&content_id=67455548&vkey=news_sd Now you wonder why they went so hard after Josh Johnson..depth is going to be a real issue in San Diego.
  11. Now regarding wRC+, the numbers are much better to evaluate if a player has enough plate appearances to qualify. Guys who rank highly with wRC+ and are franchise players include Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera, Chris Davis, Joey Votto, Andrew McCutchen, David Ortiz and Paul Goldschmidt. However, these numbers can change in a season, and last season's stats can't always be taken with a grain of salt. Other things to consider include health, age/injury related regression or progression, etc.
  12. Moises Sierra can be useful if used properly as a DH type and not an OF. Although I imagine he will get plenty of reps in the OF in the spring to see if at least can improve..
  13. Votto can cheer all he wants about wRC+.. but it's his responsibility to drive in runs. With Choo gone, the Reds lineup faces serious regression, and Billy Hamilton will have to hit in other to replace Choo's loss. No wonder the PECOTA rankings have the Reds missing the playoffs. Cincy didn't give him that big contract to just draw BBs all the time.. they expect him to hit 30/100 every year, especially in that hitter's haven of Great American Ballpark.
  14. The best guys based on wRC (weighted runs created) are: Miguel Cabrera 192 Mike Trout 176 Chris Davis 167 Jayson Werth 160 Joey Votto 156 (EE is 14th at 145, Bautista is 26th at 134) And a trade might be a good idea for him, even with all the runs he creates, as that contract is going to become an albatross for a small market team like the Reds, who lack the funds to bring in guys to help drive those runs in.. especially with Brandon Phillips set to decline and Bruce getting expensive and unlikely to resign in Cincy when he hits free agency. Also remember they had Shin Soo-Choo last year to help.. Billy Hamilton is a HUGE downgrade, even with all his speed. And there are no bats on the way on the farm.. trades and their winning have drained their system. If Votto were on the Jays, he'd be much more appreciated, because we have the bats to help drive in all the runs he creates. Plus we have the money to surround him with talent.
  15. Definitely, as Texas's options are very limited at C if Soto/Arencibia get injured, with Robinson Chirinos (who may not even be a catcher anymore), and low-level prospects Jose Felix and Tomas Telis, but I expect the Rangers to add some depth before Spring Training games start.
  16. Good depth signing for the A's. He'll be a good stash in Sacramento, with the outfield of the A's already set with Cespedes, Crisp, Reddick and Gentry.
  17. You forgot about Erik Kratz. Thole has options remembering BTW.
  18. Mets made an offer to Stephen Drew: Robert Brender ‏@robertbrender Francesa said he doesn't know how many years the #Mets offered Dew, but an offer was made. They are currently fighting over amount of years. Obvious he'll end up with the Mets, as Boston wants to give Xander Bogaerts the everyday job at SS no matter what.
  19. Red Sox lost Ellsbury, Salty and Drew and are bound for regression from Victorino and their pitching. That explains the 89-73 record projected by PECOTA. As for the Jays, add Jimenez or Santana and we're near the top. Wake up AA!
  20. Mariners open to multi-year deal with Nelson Cruz, and signing Fernando Rodney: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24429456/mariners-in-talks-with-free-agent-nelson-cruz-they-also-eye-rodney
  21. Good thing the Cardinals pitching and their offense led them to a World Series.. they had several bad outfielders defensively in Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday and Jon Jay. And David Freese was so awful defensively that the Cards did the right thing by trading him to the Angels for Peter Bourjos.
  22. Well, Goins had a 6.2 UZR at 2B last year. He's a significant upgrade defensively at 2B as is.. with the bat, not so much, depending what Seitzer does with him. Sierra and Pillar, amazingly, are better than Cabrera defensively in the outfield right now, depending on Cabrera's recovery from surgery. Gose stinks anywhere in the outfield as it stands.. he needs a lot of work in CF..
  23. Royals had the best UZR.. yet they couldn't make the playoffs. Out of the 10 best by UZR, only Tampa, LA and Boston made the playoffs. Cardinals were 27th.. yet made it to the World Series.
  24. Cardinals were even worse than the Jays in UZR at -49.4.. part of the reason the Cards traded Freese away for Bourjos, moved Carpenter back to 3rd and installed Wong/Ellis at 2nd for 2014.
  25. Let's just hope JPA learns some plate discipline in Texas, along with defense. Otherwise it won't matter what he does against us. Remember, this is a guy who set MLB records for worst OPS (.592), and dragged down our team with his ineptness behind the plate.
