  1. I think teams negotiate and then the 20m is paid seperately and it's understood that if you want to sign him that must be paid as part of the deal. So, you pretty much just negotiate a deal with his agent, then the 20m is done after he agrees to a deal with whichever team. From what I understand. He's going to the dodgers or yanks, so it doesn't make a difference really. lol
  2. They also desperately need a young ace in the rotation, so they really have no choice. The Jays can't say they are win now mode without doing what it takes to actually win.
  3. He's a serious FA, and a serious team that wants to win will land him. Most likely the dodgers but I could see the dbacks/cubs also. The cubs want young guys, and he fits that bill, plus being intl and not costing a draft pick. If he was 10 years older and required 1-2 prospects + was overpaid then I think the Jays might be interested.
  4. Come on AA, convince the boys to get this done! Tell them about intl media coverage, the large asian population in Canada that might follow the team now, sales of merchandise overseas, etc.. etc..
  5. 162-0 here we come
  6. I doubt they are fully exposed, but remember, protection costs money. You don't know how much or what kind of hedges they have and at what rates either. When the US dollar was stronger, it hurt the Habs and Expos bottom line, so even with their hedges it still affected their business.
  7. The OP is correct. A lot of forex experts believe the dollar will weaken throughout 2014. There is right now heavy selling on the CAD dollar for whatever reason. Whoever said they hedge their bets, and the dollar fluctuation is insignificant is 100% incorrect. While a lot of revenues are in CAD and expenses/payroll are in USD, they might have forex options but you don't know the quantity of their options or what prices they are locked in at or how long they have options for. Either way, since revenues are in CAD, that's what matters, since the teams down south have their revenues in a stronger US dollar moving forward, that's the only thing we do know.
  8. It depends, if by contending you mean trying to stay out of last place again this year then yes. They will be contending for that.
  9. That window story is BS. I thought it was true but the Yanks can retool in 1 offseason just by outspending everyone. The Jays need to get out of that mentality and start thinking of a plan that balances winning with intelligent baseball moves. Going for it all is not going to work when the team is still missing pieces, everyone here can agree.
  10. Perhaps, but not where they should be. Which is the point. A slight improvement given the huge increase in payroll is no accomplishment.
  11. Most of the top prospects are in low levels in the minors, meaning, they can go from decent to average very quick. There are no real positional players in the minors. I look at the Yanks/Red Sox as being pretty decent for the next couple of years in our division. That's why. I see an organization that believes it is in win now mode, but won't make the completing moves to do so, instead of trading certain players for assets that could help the team in the next couple of years because it is probably the best thing to do since they aren't going to sign any FAs. I see a team that will most likely finish in second to last in the division this year barring any other moves. I could go on and on, but at the end of the day, when the season ends and the results speak for themselves, then perhaps AA will recognize that he needs to make some changes.
  12. LOL, that will most likely happen. But, why do you think AA would rather go after Shark then Garza/Tanaka who are better imo if there are no payroll constraints? I mean, you would think he would sign a FA pitcher since there are still several decent ones left, then use the trade chips he has for a 2b. Assuming we don't have a payroll limit for the moves.
  13. This is probably his make or break year. All the AA fanboys on the board will have to accept that maybe it's not just 'bad luck' when a pattern forms and the Jays finish under .500 or miss the playoffs again, which seems like it most likely will happen. All his small high reward trades with relievers were completely wiped out when he gutted the team and built it around ageing pitchers and a high payroll that most likely won't be too competitive. So, considering I'm extremely unsatisfied with the state of the team and its future, I would say he's not a good GM. If Beane/Friedman had a 135m payroll, just imagine the team they would assemble, those guys are good GMs. AA is just a fart in the wind.
  14. What did the numbers say last year?
  15. Listen, Choo isn't like every other player. He gets on base. So, it's not like a huge power decrease is going to affect his value when he's 36-37. This is a pretty solid deal, even if it gives the rangers 5 solid years. Yes, the Rangers are a hitting machine team, and we knew he would land there. But, I like this deal for them, because they now have someone who can get on base all the time for Fielder, who will then just jack them out. Blue Jays should take a look at the playoff teams now and plan accordingly. They now have no choice but to rebuild since they will not make the playoffs no matter what they do now. If they don't sign Tanaka + a 2b, this team has no shot at anything but most likely last in the division.
  16. He's gone at the deadline when it's obvious the jays are too far back. AA will have no choice, he can't just let him walk without getting something back. If he still hits like he did last year, even though he won't have as much trade value right now (for a full year) as he will at the deadline (FA), I think some team in the playoff hunt will toss up a nice prospect for him. That's in an ideal world with a smart GM. Now that I'm thinking about it, since we have AA, all bets are off, he actually might hold onto him and let him walk for nothing thinking right until the end the Jays might make the playoffs.
  17. 2 team 10 player trades happen very frequently. But, I don't know how to put this lightly without possibly offending you. That trade is retarded. Santos/Delabar could fetch decent players, and so could Rasmus. I just don't know where or why you came up with this horrendous trade. You basically add 1 SP and killed the BP and took away some decent prospects and a solid OF. Makes 0 sense.
  18. LOL , well said! But at the end of the day, believe it or not, if AA is making Rogers a profit, then he's technically doing his job regardless of the w/l record.
  19. JP made us suck for 1/2 the payroll. So, by default he was less crappy.
  20. I think the article says after they were turned down they went after Beltran. I don't think they were going to do Beltran + Choo.
  21. Those are very good points you brought up. But in baseball, and a lot of sports in general, you have a revolving door of players due to contracts/injuries/performance issues etc.. I think to sum it up, there's no plan. They targeted the wrong set of players in trades and have struggled in FA and with international players in completing the rest of the puzzle. This offseason isn't over, and you know AA is set on a trade. I doubt it will impact the team much because I still see several holes. I don't think there are enough moves AA can do this offseason to make this a playoff team, that's my opinion and we'll see what the Vegas odds are come spring training.
  22. I know he's more of a utility man, but he has a decent bat and the dodgers are considering him for 3b. But, anyone see him as a fit as our 2b? I
  23. Looks like some of the posters here were quite a bit off in what he'd sign for or what he was apparently worth. But, it is a bit upsetting we didn't at least get it on him, there's no way he'd have picked KC over Toronto if there was an offer for the same amount.
  24. It is 100% tampering. You can't talk about the length, any type of contract details about another player. Imagine the yanks said, if Mike trout was here we'd have him on a 10 year 300 mill contract. That's why you can't talk about another player or any type of details on their contract situation, which the yanks just did by saying they'd have him on a 10 year deal.
  25. lol 12.5 or 15m for Infante??????? are you his agent or something? I wouldn't go over 9m a year for him, at the most. That would beat the yanks 3/24 offer.
