  1. Yes. All that being said, California taxes and cost of living has to be at least equal and probably greater than Toronto. But if its between us and the Red Sox, then I'd assume Boston is lower overall. I don't think the Jays are in on Sandoval at all though because I believe they dont want Lawrie off 3rd in the long-run. I'd rather bring in a Zobrist, Lowrie, or if all else fails miserably, Beckham.
  2. Wilner is just following the crowd, he didn't give any original thought or value-added insight re:framing, which is his norm. He basically regurgitated what Fangraphs/other Brian Kenny media disciples have said, and mixed it in with the Rogers-inspired optimism, as usual. I can't really listen to the guy anymore. Hes such a hypocrite, and its comical now. Imagine if the Red Sox signed Martin to that identical deal, and he were asked to comment on it. He'd be all over it as a ridiculous overpay, something the Jays shouldnt touch, how will he be on the turf after catching at age 36...on and on. Yet, the Jays sign him, and hes talking about every positive it brings, how framing doesnt age, how Martin's athleticism will allow him to not break down...etc. etc. etc. He's been a joke ever since Rogers bitchslapped him at Cito's request.
  3. Anyone listening to the Jerry Howarth interview right now on the Blair show. Both him and Blair are dropping some good Nuggets re:Dickey. Blair let it be known that he was told that RA and Gibbons had some heated run-ins in the clubhouse, and Howarth said that RA is an island to himself in the clubhouse, and that is NOT what is needed on a team of 25 guys, and goes on to praise Buehrle. If Jerry is coming out and saying that, Its made up my mind 100% that Dickey (and Thole) will be traded this offseason.
  4. Lester is a fantasy. So is Shields, Scherzer, etc. These guys will get 6 and 7 year deals. The Jays wont go there, and have eliminated themselves, for better or worse, before the game started when it comes to these guys.
  5. Need to address the OF next. I'd love Markakis. Just NOT facing him is probably worth 1 win per year at least.
  6. I will go ahead and apologize here. I'm glad that the Jays made this signing. Its the going rate if you want to use the free agent market to acquire talent and hold on to your own assets. As I was saying, you can only go so long seeing other teams sign guys to these contracts and compete, only to see the Jays not be willing to and not. I'm very happy about this signing.
  7. Promising twitter banter here... Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 13h13 hours ago Caveat to earlier report on #Cubs as leader for Martin: #BlueJays still could be in mix. #Tigers feared TOR would outbid them for VMart. Peter Gammons ‏@pgammo 3m3 minutes ago @Ken_Rosenthal You were right on Toronto, as ever, according to my latest text @Ken_Rosenthal Martin will be a huge sign for Jays 0 replies 11 retweets 3 favorites
  8. Every time AA gets outbid on a free agent and the apologists laud him for it...I think of North Korea
  9. Its fair if your argument is not to spend so much on Vmart, because him alone doesnt get us over the top. I can see that line of thinking, as you'd like to spread your finite resources out more. But if your argument is, as you originally said, that any contract thats over 2-years for Vmart is a bad contract, then youre looking at this through the too-narrow value obsessed prism which is the cause of the Blue Jays' mediocrity throughout the AA/Beeston era.
  10. This is my point about obsessing over individual player value in a vaccuum, which is what AA does, and its what the apologist sect of the Toronto media has accustomed Jays fans to do as well. Would you give up the '93 world series to get back the money the team overpaid for the 1.3 WAR season in '95? Today's Blue Jays fan would've scoffed at giving Winfield 2 years in the 1992 offseason, Laughed at any team that gave Molitor 3-years, and wouldve been content with going into the '93 season with Darnell Coles and Turner Ward as their DH.
  11. Its concerning that there are so many brainwashed Jays fans who, because of AA's over obsession with individual players' value in a vaccuum, have been bamboozled by the Rogers Media and Wilner-ilk into thinking every free agent signing is stupid, and are glad that their blue jays are smart enough not to get involved in such a thing. Were you around in 93? Was Molitor a terrible signing signing then? Its a pretty similar situation, all else being equal. I feel that Jays fans back then had the winners mentality and applauded when their team made moves like this aimed at winning it all, just like the Tigers and Illitch are doing now. That was before the apologists and defenders in the media took over.
  12. ...AKA the Annual Offseason Carousel of Disappointment (OCOD) Since this is the mantra of the current management, contact everyone, get outbid on everyone, lets discuss here. VMart got 68 for 4 years. MVP type bat, but given this idea of 'streaming vets through the DH spot', didn't make much sense for him in Toronto. At least he wouldve fit in the 5-year policy. Next Up on the OCOD Russell Martin. Will the Jays pony up the $16mil per to bring Russell home? Lets see. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/11/cubs-appear-to-be-front-runners-for-russell-martin.html
  13. Wow, we are swimming in second base prospects now.
  14. Yeah, still havent picked my jaw up off the floor from when I found out we won the Darvish posting. #ohwait
  15. He'll end up trading for someone, and overpaying in terms of prospect assets like he did in the Marlins deal, when those players couldve been had the year before for just money. I don't get why value lines up in AA's mind on these stupid trades, but never does in the free agent market.
  16. This is stupid. Any Blue Jay fan who has paid any attention during the AA/Beeston era has to roll their eyes at the notion of the Jays signing any of these guys. They will offer 3-years to guys who end up getting 7 and 8 year deals, then say no no no, its not money, we were competitive on dollars, it was term. Im getting irked thinking about listening to Beeston and AA spin this crap again in a few months.
  17. I don't understand this reasoning. Its not like he's 34 right now, and you're worrying about him aging badly into his late 30's. He willbe playing his age 33 year at the end of a 4 year deal. I hear things like 'body type' and what not, but what does that really mean. Just because one pudgy guy stopped hitting at age 32 doesnt mean Melky will. The PED issue should really be a non-issue, if they really believe he is off them. At least, he's been off them for 2 years, and it didnt seem to affect his ability in 2014. He's average at worst right now in LF, and I can see him slowing down there, but if you have to shift him to DH in the last year or so, thats not the worst thing in the world. Its not like hes playing a premium position like Reyes. Melky at 3 years is a no-brainer, and at 4, i'd still do it.
  18. When the Jays won? It was in the 40-50mil range, which was at the top or near the top at the time.
  19. I always wonder how the dynamics of the front office works in situations like this, with a club president and GM, both of baseball operations ilk. For example, Hoyer and Epstein were both GM's, Epstein was hired by the cubs as President, then he hired Hoyer as GM. Similarly, Friedman was hired as President of Baseball ops, and Zaidi is GM (although Zaidi was asst GM in Oak) Do they act like Beeston and Anthopoulos, where the GM has 'final say' on day-to-day baseball moves such as roster mgmt, waiver claims, trades, free agent signings (within the payroll parameters, of course), etc. or is it more like AA and LeCava, where Hoyer and Zaidi are GM's in name only, but they're in fact functioning as assistant GM's do in a Beeston/AA/LeCava title situation. Guess it doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things, but just something i've wondered.
  20. Cubs will actually save their trade assets, and use free agency to bulk up their pitching for the most part. How it should be done.
  21. LOL at Jeff Blair hinting that the Jays are very interested in, and will sign Russell Martin as a free agent.
  22. Yes, we've traded Lind for another Redmond who will make $4mil this year. Terrible. AA will take the small sample size in relief for Estrada, and use that to justify the deal. Then again, this is the guy who traded Yan Gomes for Esmil Rogers, so we shouldnt be surprised.
  23. Estrada allowed 29 HR's pitching in the NL. Should play well in the Rogers Centre. Motherf***inas;fkjeq
