    You say this as if him being projected for 5 WAR is nothing. Only a handful of players reach that mark in a season, and few are projected to perform at that level. I think barring any aggravations of current injuries or the emergence of new ones (entirely possible and should be factored in), JD is probably a true talent 4 win player if not better for some years to come. Decline is obviously to be expected for a player his age, but it won't be so precipitous that he's a sunk cost. Remember we had Bautista throughout pretty much the same stage and that turned out pretty well for us. My point is simply that if you have a chance to retain a player this good at a non-exorbitant cost, you do so and figure out the rest later. I don't think anyone saw Pujols falling off a cliff the way that he did (unless you believe the age rumours are true), and Hamilton was a pretty risky player himself. And yes, I do understand the risk of signing a player in his decline phase to a longterm deal, that's definitely a huge consideration to take if/when we decide whether we want to keep JD when his team control with the Blue Jays runs out.

    It shouldn't really be either or, but the chances that any prospect in baseball - let alone in our own farm system - becomes as good as Josh Donaldson, are slim to none. When you have a player that good, you build around them if the possibility exists. Building around a player that good does not mean you ignore your farm system, on the contrary, you try to construct a sustainable model of success in which talent is continually being added to the team, be it from your farm system or outside the organization.

    We don't know whether or not they want to resign him or whether or not Donaldson has any intention of coming back at a reasonable price. It would be purely speculation at this point. I agree that it would suck to let him go for nothing, but there's just too much information missing from the big picture. Donaldson is still probably a 10+ WAR player in the next two seasons, that's not someone you trade for a few B prospects, especially if you believe the team has a good chance for contention; the return has to be satisfactory for both the short and long term. Is something like Rosario + Conforto a good start? Probably, but is that enough? That's all up to the team's internal evaluations and how likely we are to retain Donaldson past the 2018-2019 offseason.

    I think Shatkins are all about retooling. I don't think we'll be seeing a full scale tear down any time soon. Also it's been mentioned before, but when you have a player of Donaldson's caliber, you try to make the most of his time here.

    You can sign Harper for 7-10 years at a price tag of $400 million, which I'm pretty sure the Blue Jays would not offer. So in the end, you'll likely end up losing either player since Donaldson won't be come cheap either. So, as far as having a monster in the level of Bryce Harper for two seasons, the Blue Jays have him in Josh Donaldson. I think it's pretty self explanatory, I don't believe I'm way off base here. Josh Donaldson might be the best positional player to have ever put on a Blue Jays uniform, he's still only 31 years of age. Am I saying he's probably more valuable than Bryce Harper will be over the next 10 seasons? No. Are they currently at roughly the same level of talent, and we should expect this to continue until they both reach free agency? Yes, under reasonable expectations this should be the case.

    Sure, he has the bigger upside with him being younger and JD being in his decline years. Still, team control would be the same and like I said, they're about the same talent level with Donaldson projecting better for this season. So it's pretty much even in the end.

    Yay, Oakland game postponed, Trout and Bryant both s***ing the bed. Also really glad I picked JA Happ, and to add insult to injury (literally!), the Blue Jays then proceeded to f*** up a rundown on the next batter when Happ left, deducting me 2 points for an earned run.

    Am I wrong? They both become free agents at the same time and they're about the same talent level (JD actually projects for more WAR than Harper this season while beating him in the last two years combined).
