There most likely have been a number of plays that he hasn't made that an average CF would make.

Jeter looked fine at SS for years too, and every single defensive metric available tells us he was hot garbage there. The eye test tells us Hernandez hasn't really done anything too well out there except catch routine balls, as a CF you have to do a lot more than that.
