  1. Is there anything that makes Clarkin special? Anything that distinguishes from the myriad of other HS pitchers drafted?
  2. Still can't get this fancy twitter thing to work. Here's the text of the tweet: John Lott @LottOnBaseball Meanwhile, Chad Jenkins, the #BlueJays putative 6th starter, allowed 10 hits and 6 runs in 4.2IP for Buffalo tonight. https://twitter.com/LottOnBaseball/status/344630642656550912
  3. Chad Jenkins: It's over 344630642656550912 They should stretch out Brad Lincoln especially with the bullpen nearly at full strength with Oliver back. Jenkins's good fortune seems to have run out.
  4. Someone will be upset that you drafted a true Cardinal.
  5. I have two of the last five picks but there's no way I'm exhausting that list.
  6. Yeah after awhile I gave up on being precise. I never follow my exact script in a draft like this anyways. I look at the group of guy who are coming up and rank more precisely once my turn comes up. In this draft, everything was up in the air after the top 3.
  7. Same here. There are tons of really young prospects spread out across various systems. Few of them will pan out but they are all well worth taking a flyer on. I have 85 names in addition to the 2013 draftees. Most of them are quite young.
  8. After I wrote that, I realized how bad it sounded. Gibbers would love that.
  9. He only posts on the other board but I thought that was a preference. I think him and Juiced have a history.
  10. There's also the question of the defensive spectrum. If you draft a CF prospect, you end with a CF or at the very least as corner OF. If you draft a corner OF prospect, you may end up with a DH. A shortstop prospect may actually be a 2B or 3B. A 3B prospect may actually be a 1B. A 1B prospect may be a DH only player. And a player is not limited to one demotion along the defensive spectrum so you kind of have to start at the top of the spectrum if you want players who will return defensive value.
  11. You make a good point about Bickford's command but I still hate this emphasis on prep pitching. I think the fact that it worked so well in 2010 was a mixed blessing because it's a pretty risky strategy especially when you don't have the high volume of picks that you had back then. Early round pitchers bust out more often than position players and late round pitchers yield more breakouts so it doesn't take a rocket scientist (or Nox) to see what the optimal approach is. The Jays are putting a lot of stock in their scouts with this approach and the fact is for every Syndergaard that the scouts have identified in the past, there have been plenty of Kevin Comers.
  12. Your shifting the discussion. I'm not saying top end starter don't come from the early rounds. I'm saying projects like Bickford can always be found later.
  13. There is no such thing as a 1B prospect.
  14. The best argument for Bickford is that they are planning to lowball him. If they meet his demands it will be a seriously risky investment.
  15. The fact that you can still draft a guy like this in round 11 is big part of what's so infuriating about this draft. You can always find a guy that's raw and throws hard late in the draft. That's the argument that Nox keeps making.
  16. My darkhorse would be Bickford. Very young and pitches (potentially) for the Jays, that could appeal to Gibbers. He did take Osuna in the second round of the last draft.
  17. He had just about the biggest clusterf*** of a season that a quaterback could have and he still hasn't committed to baseball. This guy is looking like a two sport bust because he's in love with the wrong sport.
  18. I would have done the same. It's not great that he's in Colorado but it's probably a mistake to value context over talent.
  19. Darn. So much for Gray dropping. I was hoping he'd fall out of the top 5.
  20. I'm not surprised. Bryant, Appel and Gray basically form their own tier and all things being equal, you should always go with the position player.
  21. I'm getting the growing impression the Jays are just going to lowball Bickford. With the new compensation system, the only way to stockpile picks in a good draft is to punt a bad one. It wouldn't be out of character for AA to try something like this. Bickford is intriguing enough to be a worthy project if he does sign for slot but the greater upside is in him not signing.
  22. A couple of hard to sign high school pitchers with spinnability concerns. The first is stupid young and has a great fastball and basically nothing else at this point. The second is better overall and was once considered a top prospect until injury concerns developed. They are both risky picks that the Jays might not try too hard to sign since next year's draft is deeper. At the same time, they both would make very intriguing prospects if they did sign. Both went earlier than where most experts had them ranked.
  23. I will be interesting to see what the Jays do with their later picks. If they draft a series of cheap seniors like last year,we'll know they are serious about trying to sign at least one of the first two picks. If they draft actual prospects, we'll know they are essentially deferring their early picks until next year.
