Man I don't know about that approach. I'd rather sign someone good and deal with the happy problem that arises if and when the prospects knock on the door than sign A.J. That's putting too much emphasis on making room for the future and not enough emphasis on fielding a good team now IMO.
Edit: They should have totally offered Ruiz three years. Yeah he'll be old by the end of the deal but that's about the time they expect those prospects to be ready so that shoudln't be as much of a concern for them as it would be for other teams. Having him now instead of AJP would be totally worth paying that extra year.
Trading Neil Walker wouldn't be worth the p.r. nightmare for the Pirates. His connections to Pittsburgh run quite deep. Legend has it Walker's father was supposed to be on Roberto Clemente's fatal flight and Clemente told him not to bother. Hanson would actually be a more realistic target given the team context.
Herp derp, due dilligence, herp derp.
I mean honestly... Players are flying all over the place. The trade market has been way more active and has provided better deals than AA could have possibly hoped for and AA is dithering about.
He's probably the only guy in baseball who thought that a strategy that consisted of putting average hitting DH only players all over the field would have any chance of working.
Swihart is their catcher of the future. I guess if they wanted someone on a one year deal it was either AJP or JPA. Given the framing numbers, I might actually prefer JPA (blasphemy I know but AJP's framing is brutal).
He's an overpaid declining assett, that's the main point. Having Profar makes it even better but even if they moved Kinsler and went to free agency it would make sense.
Jeff Passan tweeted something to the effect that the Tigers were openly shopping both Porcello and Fister for relief help. I hope he's just making stuff up because if true the Jays (and to be fair pretty much the whole league) should be kicking themselves for not pouncing on that.
At least it shows that there's validity to the notion that the Jays low minors currently look better than a lot of other team's low minor. A lot of people said as much on this board but since it really seems easy to wishcast on players that are really far away, I openly wondered if that was really the case. This lends legitimacy to the claim.
Kinsler was an up to middle stud exactly once in his career (2011). He's a decent player but he's paid like he's more then that. Combine that and the need to play Profar and if anything the fact that he was moved in the deal is a positive.
Yep. They will treat his offense as bonus which is both the right way to approach him and the probable reason why they were willing to meet the Reds price while other teams seemingly weren't.
The Rays showed with Molina that they really don't care about offense if their catcher is a positive framer. It really makes sense when you consider how heavily they depend on young pitching. They go a great job of looking at things hollistically.
Forget that. That's actually a positive scenario. What should get you pissed is the very real possibility that AA give up a far far superior package for an inferior pitcher.
Seems like they panicked because the arb deadline was getting close which is dumb because they might be the only franchise in baseball that didn't want to go to arb with Fister.
I hadn't realized until now that the teams are negotiating amongst themselves in addition to negotiating with Japanese Baseball. No wonder this is such a clusterf***. This latest proposal seems destined to fail and the whole process is going nowhere.
