Pillar is 26. Is there no room for improvement for the kid? He's played 147 games over parts of three years. That isn't even a full season's worth of games. His defense has been great and his base running has been equally good stealing 7 of 8 bags.
I must admit I was more than skeptical about his bat coming into this year myself. He looked like a fish out of water for a stretch there as well, but it's his first full season in the big leagues and young players press to much at times. The homer he hit against the twins looked like he hardly swung at the ball. The kid hass some pop in his bat. Then I look at his K rate of 16.9% and Pillar swings at pretty much everything. That's a pretty impressive k rate for someone with zero plate discipline. He can put the bat on the ball.
Does he need to develop his approach, continue to refine his mechanics and become a more complete hitter? Of course he does. 2 walks to go along with 2 hits last night was a good sign. If Pillar can take more walks, and start swinging at more pitches inside the zone, he could become a decent hitter.
I'm not saying he won't be like JPA and never get better, because that may be the case. However he's far too young in his career for me to write him off. I'm on the fence with Pillar.
