Did anyone see that strike 3 call to Betts? Completely embarrassing for the sport. The Dodgers will likely lose this game because of it. One of the worst called strikes I've seen this year, of which there have been many. MLB needs to figure this s*** out. I just don't get how any umpire with good eyes calls that a strike. His next start would be in Dunedin against the Phillies. Just tell him its the Clearwater Threshers. He's pitched in Dunedin enough maybe that'll be enough to overcome his mental block. Not an away crowd either. Smaller stadium.

Maybe he has underlying command issues which didn't show up in his minor league stats because he overpowers everyone but start to show up because he gets to the majors and no one is fooled.

A the same time I don't see how you can say his stuff looked great. I refuse to believe his stuff was good in a start where he didn't have a single whiff. There are lots of pitchers with no command who still get strikeouts. His slider, changeup and curveball weren't fooling anyone today. How can anyone say this looked great?

While I agree it's likely mental I don't know if this is entirely true. A lot of higher end pitchers can get by in the minors with overpowering stuff and posting low walk rates. Look at Jose Berrios when he first came up. The command issues sometimes don't present themselves until the highest level. His stuff was garbage today. His fastball was 93-98 and had 20 command and he didn't get any whiffs on his slider or changeup. This was very discouraging start.

Fair enough. I just don't think you can complete write off the ball change for affecting his output. The truth is probably a culmination of all these things affecting his hitting. I agree with what you are saying and think it has merit.
