    As I posted earlier, Cliff Johnson's leaving as a free agent was the move that got us Tom Henke as compensation. That move finally solidified the bullpen that had always been unreliable. That move led to a great all around team.

    Definitely confirm Walker and Johnson wore 00. Johnson's familiar 44 was taken by Jeff Burroughs. Also Canseco wore 00 when he first signed, then 44 came available and then his standard 33.

    There are only a few pitchers that actually wear single digits. I was reading an article and I believe Blake Snell is the only all star pitcher with a single digit. I know I'm in the extreme minority here but to me if a pitcher wears a single digit, he's not a real pitcher.

    The Jays' own website said he was released. I think the waivers take precedence and the Jays were just premature. Embarassing.

    Robbie spat before he was retired and posted so that argument has no bearing. And in terms of the history of the game, I mean don't give numbers like 4, 6 and 7 to pitchers. I hate to see them.

    Yeah the team these days doesn't have much respect for the history of the game. Robbie Alomar was a big part of why we won two world series. But he disappears.

    Tony Fernandez will always be the real #1, just like Stieb #37. The rest just don't compare.

    Look at Howe's K/9. It was a different era.

    Maybe we could do something like pick the 100 best players (in an agreed upon order) and dedicate a win to that player.

    Hey I liked Cliff Johnson! He wore 00 when he was first brought back and we still had Jeff Burroughs who took 44. Also Johnson getting signed earned us Tom Henke as compensation. That was value!!!

    What do we do about the 0 and 00 players? A few of them. But yea--we're getting there.

    Bell was to become a DH, Moseby the new leadoff hitting left fielder, Campusano in CF. Jimy "One M" ideas. He could really play CF. Just couldn't hit worth a lick.

    Yeah he was supposed to be a good hitter but had a bad car accident if I remember correctly. He was supposed to be a 2b.

    When Felipe Crespo and Delgado both made the team, they swapped numbers (6/21) after spring training for the beginning of the season.

    when numbers were first issued, the single numbers were based on the batting order. A pitcher would not wear 6 or 7, that would be a hitter. Babe Ruth wore 3, and batted 3rd, Gehrig wore 4 and batted 4th.

    I may be old school, but single numbers only go with position players, not pitchers. Mcdonald was one of the best/most reliable defensive players we ever had.

    when I read analyses like these, I wonder why Horwitz was put on the 40. I don't see his value. I'd like to think another Don Mattingly but that's too blue sky thinking.

    Me too. It seems either faded out or incomplete.

    Yes it was a good one but I always liked Bill Mazeroski's.

    Wonder how many of the players in that one have kids in the league now. Guerrero, Biggio, Bichette, etc etc. But yeah, I remember spending the $5-10 on those "magazines". I forget which one it was, but one was definitely better than the rest.

    If he was a righty I'd maybe understand it, but a lefty has more value. The only other possibility is he's off to Japan or something like that. But otherwise there's something more to the picture here.
